Derry will play in Division 3 in next year's revamped NHL after their play-off hopes were ended by Division 2B table toppers Carlow on Sunday.
The Oak Leafers were level at 1-4 to 0-7 at half-time at Dr Cullen Park but Carlow pulled away in the second half to win 1-14 to 1-7.
Meath pipped Derry for the play-off spot after beating Armagh 1-16 to 1-7.
The Royal led 0-9 to 0-5 at the break and despite conceding a Ryan Gaffney goal, they eased to a comfortable win.
Niall Hackett hit five of Meath's first-half points while Declan Coulter notched four of Armagh's scores in the opening period.
Meath extended their lead to 0-13 to 0-7 before Gaffney's goal gave Armagh a glimmer of hope to cut the margin to three points.
However, Meath hit 1-3 without reply in the closing stages, including Alan Ryan's goal when his shot proved too hot to handle for Armagh goalkeeper Joseph Burke.
Like Derry, Meath won three of their five Division 2B games but the Royals progress to the play-off because of a superior scoring difference.
