Manager Brian McGilligan's pre-match sense of foreboding was justified as Derry were hammered in their Allianz NHL Division 2A opener against Meath.
Derry were minus a host of dual players and while the rookies started promisingly, the roof quickly caved in.
Meath's 0-7 to 0-5 lead turned into a 1-12 to 0-5 advantage by the break, helped by Stephen Clynch's goal.
The second half was one-way traffic with Niall Hackett bringing his tally to 0-7 and Clynch finishing on 1-4.
Rory Convery hit five of Derry's points while Paddy Henry, Ben Dodds and Philip McGlade were the other Oak Leaf scorers.
