Kilkenny hurling legend DJ Carey has announced his retirement from the inter-county scene after 15 years at the top level.
DJ Carey made his Championship debut for Kilkenny in 1991
During his glittering career the 35-year-old won five All-Ireland medals and nine All Star awards.
Some had predicted Carey would continue in an impact sub role for Brian Cody's Cats, but the player ruled it out.
"I would rather be someone who was fit and strong enough to hurl for 70 minutes," said Carey.
"Whether I would get picked or not is another story.
"There is nobody with greater respect for Brian Cody than me."
Carey is expected to continue playing for his club side Gowran.
