Canavan stars in Errigal win
![]() Peter Canavan outpaces Emmett Brennan
Peter Canavan produced a magnificent display as Errigal Ciaran defeated Castleblayney 2-10 to 1-9 in Sunday's AIB Ulster Club Football Semi-Finals at Clones. The Tyrone club will meet Bellaghy in the Ulster decider after the Derry Champions defeated Gowna in a dour battle 0-9 to 0-6 in the Clones curtain-raiser. Canavan created Eamon Kavanagh's opening Errigal Ciaran goal in the 20th minute with the Omagh Town soccer player finishing to the net after great work by the former Allstar. The goal put Errigal Ciaran 1-4 to 0-2 ahead but helped by points from Kieran Tavey, the Monaghan side, who shocked defending All-Ireland Champions Crossmaglen in the previous round, reduced the Tyrone club's lead to 1-5 to 0-5 at the interval. Canavan instrumental Tavey goaled early in the second period to level matters but Canavan was instrumental in Errigal's second goal on 58 minutes with his initial shot saved only for substitute Adrian O'Donnell to finish to the net. Canavan then hit two late points to ensure the Tyrone team's victory.
Tavey was unlucky to finish on the losing side considering he contributed a total of 1-6 to Castleblayney. The earlier Semi-Final was a much less entertaining affair with Gavin Diamond hitting five of Bellaghy's nine points. Missed penalties Both teams missed a penalty early on with Diamond driving wide from the spot and Bernard Morris seeing his shot saved by Bellaghy goalkeeper Ciaran Donnelly. David O'Neill produced an excellent performance for Bellaghy at full-back while Fergal Doherty ruled midfield in the crucial second half. Gowna's Cathaldus Hartan was sent off in the closing stages after aiming a kick of Bellaghy's Cathal Diamond. Dunloy hammered Slaughtneil 4-14 to 0-9 in Sunday's AIB Ulster Club Hurling Final at Casement Park. Opened floodgates Seamus McMullan, Paddy Richmond, Ciaran McGrath and Liam Richmond scored Dunloy's goals. The match was tight early on but McMullan's 19th minute goal opened the floodgates and Paddy Richmond's strike helped the Antrim Champions to a 2-7 to 0-3 lead by the interval.
The second half was a procession with only Dermot Doherty's accuracy from frees a reliable source of Slaughtneil scores. In the All-Ireland Club Camogie Semi-Finals, Swatragh caused a major surprise by defeating Munster Champions Granagh 2-8 to 1-7. Another brawl Aileen Tohill and Paula McAtamney hit the Swatragh goals. Granagh's goal came in the final minute. Swatragh's manager Kevin McNaughton confirmed afterwards that he has agreed to stay on as Derry hurling boss for another year. The Derry club will meet Pearses Rathnure in the All-Ireland Final. Pearses defeated Connacht Champions St Anne's in Sunday's other Semi-Final. Meanwhile, Tyrone's GAA authorities are certain to investigate a brawl which caused the abandonment on Sunday's county U16 Football League final between Cookstown and Killeeshill. Spectators are thought to have been involved and one eyewitness claimed the scenes were as bad as witnessed at the recent controversial Antrim Football Final between Cargin and St Paul's.
