Canavan set for Ireland recall
Peter Canavan
Peter Canavan is ready to return to Ireland set-up
Peter Canavan is poised for a dramatic recall to Ireland's international rules panel.

Six of manager Brian McEniff's squad will be involved in the All Ireland final replay which takes place 24 hours before the first rules match against Australia.

And that leaves the way open for Tyrone star Canavan who was originally placed on Ireland's stand-by list.

Last Sunday's draw between Galway and Kerry has ruled six players out of the October 8 clash with the Aussies - Seamus Moynihan, Dara O Se and Declan O'Keefe of Kerry and the Galway trio of Michael Donnellan, Padraig Joyce and Sean Og de Paor.

"A draw was just about the last outcome I wanted on Sunday," said boss McEniff.

Paul McGrane

"It's a real blow to lose players of that quality so close to the series, but opportunities will now arise for others." As well as the mercurial Canavan, Paul McGrane looks set to be elevated to the squad.

Both are reported to have been training hard and impressing the Irish selectors.

Although McEniff will draw on his stand-by list, he says he will not add to the players already named.

A further worry for GAA authorities is how badly the Croke Park attendance will be hit by the fact that the All Ireland replay takes place at the same venue on the same weekend.

McEniff would like to see the series taking place in March, before the Australian Rules and GAA seasons get going.

The Australians arrive in Ireland on October 4.

The 22 players in the All-Australia team - the equivalent of Ireland's GAA All Stars - are in the panel, making it the strongest ever to represent the Aussies since the Series began in 1984.
