Wami turns heat on O'Sullivan
Gete Wami
Gete Wami will challenge Sonia O'Sullivan over 5,000 metres
Gete Wami, last year's World 10,000 metres champion, has shocked rivals with her last-minute entry for the 5,000m.

The Ethiopian, who outsprinted Paula Radcliffe to win over the longer distance in Seville last August, decided to double up close to the deadline for race entries.

Wami will line up against Ireland's Sonia O'Sullivan on Friday in her heat, allowing the pair to look at each other from close quarters before Monday's final.

O'Sullivan will be concerned at Wami's decision to run. It means, barring an accident, she will link up with Ethiopian team-mates Ayelech Worku, last year's World 5000m bronze medallist, and Worknesh Kidane in the final.

Past experiences indicate the three Ethiopians will run as a team to upset the rhythm of both O'Sullivan and last year's World 5,000m champion at the distance, Gabriela Szabo of Romania.

Maria Coleman sailed superbly in today's Europa Fleet Race. Danish-based Coleman was third overall with 34 points after four competitions. Britain's Shirley Robinson led on 14 ahead of Kristine Roug from Denmark whose score was 29.

Late addition

This morning in the 50m rifle prone qualification round, Alan Lewis, a late addition to the Irish team after receiving a wild card entry finished 41st.

The 49-year-old shot 587 as Sweden's Jonas Edman headed the table with 599 - two short of the Belfast man's personal best.

After the cross-country stage of the Three-Day Event, Austin O'Connor, riding Fabio, was 19th with 92 penalties while Trevor Smith on High Scope was two places and 9.8 penalties behind his team-mate.

David O'Connor on Custom Made leads the overnight field with 29 penalties.
