Brian O'Driscoll celebrated a long-awaited Grand Slam with Ireland

Brian O'Driscoll has been voted the top player of the 2009 RBS Six Nations after leading Ireland to their first Grand Slam for 61 years.

The Leinster centre scored tries in four of Ireland's five victories during their historic championship campaign.

O'Driscoll won a fans' online poll ahead of runner-up, Italy back-row Sergio Parisse, and Ireland lock Paul O'Connell who came third.

"To be voted best player by the fans makes it special," said O'Driscoll.

"I am really proud of our team effort right the way through the tournament and I would not be in this position if it was not for my team-mates.

"The support of the fans throughout our campaign has been unwavering and a huge part of the team's success."

The fans voted on a shortlist of players chosen by former internationals Jason Leonard (England), Keith Wood (Ireland), David Sole (Scotland), Ieuan Evans (Wales), Philippe St Andre (France) and Alessandro Moscardi (Italy).

Also nominated were English and Welsh full-backs Delon Armitage and Lee Byrne, and Ireland back-row Jamie Heaslip.
