NI claim further medals in Pune

The Northern Ireland team claimed more medals at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Pune, India on Thursday.

Boxer Sean Duffy made the final of the Lightweight Division after a 14-7 win over India's Neeraj Goyal and now boxes England's Danny Phillips on Friday.

Paul Hyland was beaten 16-3 in the featherweight semi-final but he is guaranteed a bronze medal.

Swimmer Chelsey Wilson won a silver medal in the 200m backstroke, having won a bronze in the 100m backstroke.

Northern Ireland had also claimed medals at the Games on Wednesday.

In track and field, Hannah Lewis took silver in the long jump while Ciara Mageean (1500m) and pole vaulter Edward Mourbey both claimed bronzes.

Swimmer Wilson also claimed bronze in the 100m backstroke in Pune with a personal best of 1:04.20.

Michael Dawson and Conor Leaney finished fourth in the 50m breaststroke and the 200m freestyle respectively while Lagan Valley athlete Curtis Woods was unlucky to miss out on a medal in the 400m.

Top qualifier Lewis led the women's long jump after leaping 5.85m in round four but England's Abigail Irozuru then jumped 5.92m in the penultimate round.

Lewis went into the final as leading qualifier after improving her personal best by 13 centimetres to 5.98m.

Later in the day, Lewis qualified for the second round of the 200m as she clocked 24.87.

Mageean went into the 1500m fancied to claim a medal and she delivered impressively by claiming bronze in 4:22.53 which left her behind Kenya's Stacy Ndiwa (4:20.16) and Canada's Jessica Anne Parry (4:22.53).

Long jumper Hannah Lewis led after round four but had to settle for silver

Woods missed a medal by an agonising .01 as he took fourth in the 400m in a PB of 47.27.

The Lagan Valley's athlete time cut .78secs off his personal best set in the semis but he finished centimetres behind England's bronze medalist Jordan McGrath.

The youngster's time also improved his Northern Ireland junior record.

After missing out on a medal in the 400m final, Woods safely progressed from the opening 200m heats after taking third in 22.41.

Gaby McNally was sixth in the women's hammer while Ben Reynolds took fifth in the men's 110 Hurdles final after clocking 14.42 - .02secs slower than his semi-final.

Hyland defeated Nigeria's Bakare Kolawole 9-3 in the quarter-finals on Wednesday while Sean Duffy also progressed to the semi-finals.

However, Hyland's Northern Ireland team-mates Michael Conlon and Neil Walker were both beaten at the last-eight stage.

Conlon suffered an unlucky countback defeat against Kenya's Eddie Nganga after the light flyweight bout ended 7-7.

Walker was beaten 11-7 by South Africa's Tankiso Makhetha in their flyweight quarter-final.

Larne competitor Matthew Hall won Northern Ireland's first medal of the games when he claimed a silver medal in the 50m Men's Rifle Prone shooting event on Tuesday.
