Northern Ireland were defeated 4-0 by Germany in their Uefa European U17 Elite qualifying group opener in Holland on Friday afternoon.

Manuel Fischer gave the Germans a first-half lead before Toni Cross, Marko Marin and Lars Bender sealed a comfortable victory.

Ruairi Harkin had Northern Ireland's best chance but the midfielder sent his lob just over.

Kenny Shiels' team now face a must-win game against Finland on Sunday.

"We produced some decent football and I think the players have learned a lot from the experience which is the most important thing," said N Ireland manager Shiels.

"I don't think we deserved to lose by four goals although they were a very good side."
