Arthur saves the day for Crues
Crusaders star Gavin Arthurs
Gavin Arthurs' penalty gave Crusaders a replay.
Crusaders 1-1 H&W Welders

A late penalty by Gavin Arthurs earned Crusaders a replay next Tuesday at Seaview.

H&W Welders had taken a shock lead in the 80th minute through Tom Cleland following a defensive blunder in the Crusaders defence.

But in a feisty battle, Arthurs saved his side at the death, and then missed a glorious chance to take them through to the last eight.

All told referee John Ferry brandished six yellow cards during the match, five in the first half to the Welders.

Crusaders, though, had full control in the first half, but could not shake down a tight defence.

Blunder

However, Stephen McBride and Arthur both went close.

Welders, however, did have their chances with Michael Surgeon twice failing to convert and Michazel Surgeon shooting at Paul Kee when put clear.

Crusaders substitute James Willis then had a shot well saved by the Welders keeper Doherty in the 77th minute after good work by Arthur.

Then came a frenetic last 10 minutes.

First that disasterous mix-up between goalkeeper Paul Kee and Davy Munster which allowed Cleland a tap in to give the Welders a shock lead.

But five minutes later the Crues were level when a great Alan Murphy shot looked to be going wide, but defender Philip Knell stuck out a hand which earned him a red card.

Up stepped Arthur to keep his side alive with a low shot from the spot into the corrner of the net.
