Glentoran 6-1 Institute

A hat-trick by striker Andy Smith enabled Glentoran to keep up the pressure on Premiership table-toppers Portadown.

The Glens are now level with Portadown on 53 points, but have a game in hand.

Smith grabbed three second-half goals in the space of 12 minutes with Darren Armour scoring two as the Glens swept aside Institute at the Oval.

Roy Coyle's side did not take long to edge in front in their search to keep the pressure on table-toppers Portadown.

Within three minutes Armour had found the net to give the home fans some early cheer.

In-form Armour reacted quickly to a loose ball when Gary Philson tackled Andy Smith and he stroked the ball past Michael Doherty from eight yards.

It was Armour who was on the scoresheet again in the 33rd minute when he poked home from close range after good approach work by Scott Young and Michael O'Neill.

Glentoran were coasting up to and after the interval and went further ahead in the 53rd minute when Smith took centre stage.

First he headed in a Young cross, but his goal run was interrupted two minutes later when Institute pulled a goal back through Ryan Coyle with an excellent strike.

But Smith got Glentoran back on track again in the 62nd minute with a delightful 20-yard chip over Doherty to give the Glens a 4-1 lead.

Smith then grabbed his hat-trick in the 65th minute when he beat Doherty to a Young through ball to slot home goal number five.

Marty Hunter wrapped up the easy ride for the Glens with goal number six in the final minute of the game.

Cliftonville -OFF- Newry Town

Following a ground inspection at Solitude the Cliftonville and Newry Town match was called off due to a waterlogged pitch.
