Bergman told to box Sinclair
Belfast's Neil Sinclair has defended the British title twice
WBU president Jon Robinson has threatened to strip welterweight champion Jan Bergman of his title.
Neil Sinclair was to have challenged Bergman for his title at Belfast's Odyssey Arena on 1 February. But it now appears that the reigning British title holder will be boxing for a vacant crown. Robinson was told of Bergman's intention to face Nottingham's Jawaid Khaliq for the WBU and IBO titles in March next year, and was not impressed.
''I told him about Neil Sinclair being the nominated challenger but Berman told me he would not let one of his fighters box a Frank Warren fighter. ''Well, that's just like saying that Liverpool no longer want to play Manchester United. ''From 1 January, Berman will no longer be part of our organization. ''We will not be renewing his licence and Bergman will be stripped of his title on the same day. "Neil Sinclair is the nominated challenger and if Bergman will not fight him then he has to be stripped. ''He knows this so if he wants to fight Khaliq that's up to him." |
