Glentoran condemn abuse
Members of the Police Service moved in when scuffles broke out in the changing room complex at St Julian's Road
Police intervened during a scuffle at Omagh

Glentoran Football Club have condemned sectarian abuse in the wake of trouble during last Saturday's Irish League game against Omagh Town.

There were reports of verbal abuse and offensive gestures at the St Julian's Road ground in Omagh.

Police also had to intervene when a scuffle broke out in the changing room area at half-time.

Glentoran responded after Omagh manager Roy McCreadie criticised the Belfast team's supporters in a newspaper article.

In the piece, McCreadie said Linfield supporters were angels compared to those of Glentoran, a comment which would infuriate some Glens followers.

Press comments

In their statement, Glentoran said the police investigation had revealed that the "sectarian element to Saturday's altercations was very minor".

The club said their supporters had been goaded by pre-match press comments from the Omagh manager.

However, the statement continued: "Glentoran Football Club do not condone sectarianism in any circumstances.

"We distance ourselves from it because we are repulsed by it.

"Glentoran are a cross-community club in every aspect, from grass roots to senior level, and we have worked hard to endorse all efforts to promote this aspect of the club."
