Balapour wins Ulster Derby
Monaghan trainer Patrick Brady hopes Balapour will race in the Galway Festival
Balapour's winning connections celebrate the win
Balapour gave Monaghan trainer Patrick Brady his first win in the Ulster Harp Lager Derby when scoring by five and a half lengths from American Gothic at Down Royal today.

Balapour (12-1), who was in the rear of the field for most of the trip, struck the front two furlongs from home and fought off the challenge of American Gothic.

Rider Tom Queally was also landing his first success in Ulster's richest flat race.

Afterwards Brady said that Balapour could have "gone round again for another lap".

He added that he hoped his star, who has won over hurdles as well as on the Flat, would be a success at the Galway Festival later in the year.

Today's race was one I'll always remember
Trainer Patrick Brady

"I'm not sure what he'll be running in," said Brady.

"He might even run twice".

Brady who has been recovering recently from a serious illness, added: "I keep getting better when I see my horses win.

"Today's race was one I'll always remember, for Balapour was out at grass for six weeks before he ran this afternoon.

"I told Tom to keep him at the back of the field and when Balapour started to gurgle to give him a break.

"I have always been worried about Balapour's wind which has been affected by a semi-paralysed larynx".

Prendergast win

The early running was made by Master Papa but before halfway eventual third Hat Or Halo and Mirpour struck the front and were still in contention six furlongs from home.

At this stage Queally was making ground rapidly on the winner but American Gothic, trained by Charles O'Brien and owned by O'Brien's legendary father Vincent, was beginning to get into contention.

However, American Gothic had nothing to reply with when Balapour made his effort.

Kevin Prendergast, who trains Master Papa, won the first race when Seaforde got the better of Lazer Lass in the Tattersalls Ireland Maiden.
