Down were on the receiving end of a hammering from Galway at Casement Park on Saturday.

The Tribesmen won by a staggering 23-point margin in what proved to be an extremely one-sided affair.

Noel Lane's side scored at will as the home team stood off them in the tackle and allowed them far too much space in which to do damage.

Fergal Healy bagged three goals for last year's All-Ireland finalists, his first being the opening goal of the match in the seventh minute.

Better fight

David Tierney added a second goal in the 18th minute despite good work by Graham Clarke in the Down goal and Alan Kerins notched the third a minute later.

Healy got his second of the game on 21 minutes, with Mark Kerins scoring in the 29th minute to give Galway a 5-8 to 0-4 lead at half-time.

Down put up a better fight in the second-half after making a couple of substitutions.

Their centre-half back Gary Savage did his best to reduce the winning margin and scored a great point from 50 yards in the 29th minute of the second-half.

Galway full-back Michael Healy was sent-off before Fergal Healy and Liam Hodgins rounded up the scoring for the Tribesmen.

Cavan 0-11 2-8 Limerick

Meanwhile, Cavan's All-Ireland campaign ended at Breffni Park on Saturday thanks to two second-half goals from the visitors in the first-round replay.

The Breffni Blues had held a first-half wind advantage and went in 0-6 to 0-5 ahead at the break.

And it was all Cavan at the start of the second-half, stretching their lead to five points while Limerick went 34 minutes without scoring.

But two goals within four minutes from substitute Johnny Murphy and Conor Mullane clinched victory for the visitors.
