Gerard Cavlan hit six points to help 14-man Dungannon edge past Strabane in the opening round of the Coca Cola Tyrone Senior Football Championship on Sunday.

Dungannon won 0-14 0-11 despite the dismissal of John Quinn midway through the first half.

The winners led 0-6 to 0-5 at the interval with John Paul Gallagher keeping Strabane in the game with a couple of fine scores.

Strabane levelled the match early in the second half but Dungannon then upped a gear to move into a 0-13 to 0-8 lead.

Gallagher chipped away at Dungannon's lead in the closing stages but the Clarkes never really looked like being caught.

In Sunday's second game at Healy Park, fine performances by Stephen O'Neill and Brian Dooher helped Clann na Gael defeat Loughmacrory 2-9 to 1-6.

Loughmacrory led 0-4 to 0-3 at the break but the Clan na Gael managed Danny Ball then switched Tyrone stars Brian Dooher and Stephen O'Neill to midfield.

Barry McGill's late goal made the game safe for Clann na Gael while Loughmacrory had substitute Gary Conway sent off in the closing stages.

In the double-header at Dungannon on Sunday evening, Errigal Ciaran defeated Kildress 2-11 to 2-6 while Eglish edged out Brackaville 3-7 to 1-8.

In Sunday afternoon's opening game in the Harp Lager Down Championship, a point from Ronan McMahon five minutes into injury-time gave Warrenpoint a 1-11 to 1-10 win over Kilcoo.

That was McMahon's sixth point of the match.

Eddie O'Hare gave Warrenpoint a great start by hitting a fourth minute goal but Donal Keenan replied with a three-pointer for Kilcoo midway through the first half.

Warrenpoint had Shay Curran sent off before half-time.

Dromore impressive

Also in the Down Championship on Sunday, a late goal from Colm McAlarney helped Castlewellan defeat Clonduff 1-9 to 0-8 in a disappointing contest at Newcastle.

Clonduff looked set for victory when they led 0-8 to 0-5 with eight minutes left.

However points from county players Ciaran McCabe, Gregory McCartan and Simon Poland then levelled the contest before McAlarney took a pass from Finbar Rice to hit 'Wellan's goal.

Damian McGrady added a further point in injury-time for Castlewellan.

In Sunday evening's game, Rostrevor hammered Annaclone 3-13 to 0-8 at Newry.

Omagh and Moortown will have to do it all again in the Coca Cola Tyrone Football Championships first round after drawing 0-11 to 1-8 in Saturday evening's game.

In the other Tyrone Championship game played, Dromore produced an impressive performance to defeat Cookstown 1-12 to 0-7.

The Harp Lager Down Football Championships game between Mayobridge and Newry Shamrocks scheduled for Saturday evening was postponed because of a bereavement connected with one of the teams.
