2002 Medallion Shield
Sullivan Upper School

Renault Medallion Shield final:
Sullivan Upper 10-8 Regent House

Sullivan tasted major rugby success for the very first time in their history thanks to an injury-time penalty by centre Darren Cave.

Cave, who scored all of his side's points in a memorable Medallion Shield victory at Ravenhill.

Many young players find Ravenhill a daunting arena, but Cave took it all in his stride.

Regent, though, will be left wondering how they let this one slip away because their pack worked like Trojans throughout.

The Newtownards side made fewer mistakes and the penalty count was very much in their favour.

However, Sullivan played with immense belief in their ability to engineer their way out of trouble by keeping the ball in hand no matter where they were on the field.

Sullivan ran the ball at every opportunity with Cave a dominant figure.

Overall their backs looked very sharp and left winger Andrew McNeice sent alarm bells ringing with his blistering pace.

Regent opened the scoring with a penalty from their skipper Jordan Millar after 11 minutes.

Buckling

He then extended their lead seven minutes later when he burst on to a Stephen Marshall kick to cross unopposed for a try.

Sullivan enjoyed greater possession in the second period but they rarely threatened until Cave opened up his box of tricks and blew the game wide open with a terrific try.

There did not appear to be anything on when he received the ball in the opposition ''22'', but some lovely footwork took in under the posts.

He landed the conversion himself, and then was present with his part in history when Regent buckled under immense pressure.

Cave was handed a difficult penalty wide to the left, but his place his effort high and handsome for victory.
