Whelan slams Dublin split
Ciaran Whelan (right) is firmly against the SRC plan
Ciaran Whelan has become the latest Dublin player to criticise plans to split the county into two parts at intercounty level.
The GAA's Strategic Review Committee has made the proposal to divide the county into north and south of the River Liffey in an attempt to reinvigorate gaelic football in the Irish capital. However, a succession of high-profile Dublin GAA voices have emphatically rejected the notion. Whelan said that he would have no desire to mark former intercounty team-mates. Whelan said the plan was "a nightmare scenario".
"I would be around 29 in 2005, when it is proposed to make the split at senior level," he said. "I think at that stage, if it was to definitely go ahead, it would be time for me to look at my own situation and consider my future". Dessie Farrell warned that the implementation of the plan could relegate Dublin football to the status of a "weaker county". "It's at the logistical and administrative end of the county that things need to be fixed up and that's fair enough," said Farrell. "The answer is to bring in extra offices, extra manpower and extra people who know what they are doing to take charge of the situation. "But for heaven's sake don't go splitting the county in two". Fermanagh win Another player Paul Curran claimed the plan could "drive people away from the game in Dublin". "I think they've gone a step too far this time and it's ridiculous. Who wants to support half a county?" said Curran. "To be perfectly honest I don't think that the plans will come to fruition anyway," he added. Meanwhile, Fermanagh earned a place in the Hastings Cup U21 Football final by defeating Sligo 1-11 to 0-12 on Sunday. Kildare edged out Cavan 1-17 to 2-10 in Saturday's first semi-final. Meanwhile, the Ulster Club Minor Hurling final between St Gall's and Kevin Lynch's scheduled for Sunday at Ballinascreen was postponed because of bad weather.
