Ballinderry finally triumph

Ballinderry 1-9 0-11 Bellaghy

Ballinderry finally nobbled holders Bellaghy to lift the Derry Senior Football title at Maghera.

In the last two finals Ballinderry tried but failed to overcome the Wolfe Tones.

But it was third time lucky for the Ballinderry boys as they squeezed home with just a point to spare following an enthralling contest at The Glen.

It was a game that had action from one end to the other with the scoreless final 10 minutes not taking anything away from the excitement.

Combining

With Derry star Enda Muldoon having overall charge of the midfield, Ballinderry led by six points to two after 20 minutes.

However, with Gareth Doherty and Joe Cassidy combining to knock over the points, Bellaghy were only 0-6 to 0-7 behind at the break.

It was Bellaghy who came storming into action on the restart with Ciaran McNally and Kevin Doherty in bullish mood while Gavin Diamond and Cassidy causing trouble up front.

Decided

Bellaghy opened up a three-point lead, but two Ger Cassidy points brought Ballinderry back to within a point.

It was nip and tuck all the way until that vital 55th minute goal that decided the contest.

Muldoon palmed a 45-metre free into the path of Declan Bateson who dived full-length to double fist the ball into the net.

Gavin Diamond did have a chance for Bellaghy to rescue the game from a free at the end, but the ball drifted wide to Ballinderry to start their celebrations.

Cavan Gaels 0-15 1-7 Gowna

Gaels finally came good in the Cavan Senior Football final when they defeated Gowna who were going for their third title in succession.

Cavan Gaels' victory sees the trophy back home on their sideboard for the first time in 23 years.

Playing in their third final in three years, they finally put to rest the ghosts of Gowna.

The Gaels had stormed into an immediate three-point lead through Michey Graham, Paul O'Donnell and Michael Collins and went in at the break eight points to three to the good.

But Gowna were not going to give up their title lightly and scored after only 30 seconds of the restart with Dermot McCabe punching the ball home.

But the young Gaels were not going to give up their chance of glory.

With Graham, O'Donnell, Collins and Gavin Duffy all doing the needful at the business end, it was enough to see the Gaels home.

Dunloy 3-15 1-17 Ballycastle

Dunloy lifted their seventh Antrim Senior Hurling title since 1990 with victory over Ballycastle at Casement Park.

The Dunloy boys just had too much firepower for the seasiders with Alaister Elliot and Martin Corry doing most of the damage.

Dunloy were well in control leading 1-7 to 1-12 at the break, before an Elliott triple soon after the restart put the game out of reach of Ballycastle.

The outsiders did try and fightback and never gave up with Malachy Dallas proving an inspiration.

However, with Elliott bagging a goal on top of Corry's effort, Dunloy took the honours.
