Sweet revenge for Derry
derry game
Hughes and McAnallen tussle with Derry's Dougan
Tyrone 0-7 1-9 Derry

Derry deservedly earned the right to face Galway in the All-Ireland semi-finals at Croke Park on 26 August.

The Oak Leaf boys gained due revenge over Tyrone in a ragged quarter-final tie at Clones with the Red Hand side finishing with 14 men after Peter Canavan was red-carded in the first half.

It was a case of the shoe being on the other foot when on their way to Ulster championship success Tyrone easily dispensed with Eamon Coleman's side.

But while Tyrone did show some fighting spirit in the second half following the lose of Canavan, Derry deservedly hung on and then stretch their lead by the end.

Derry were obviously fired up for the challenge and took advantage of the controversial back-door entry in the search for the Sam Maguire.

Derry's midfield was the key to success while their defence always had time and space to play themsevles out of danger with Gareth Doherty having a massive game.

But it was his defensive partner Sean Marty Lockhart who took the major honours with a storming performance that helped keep the Tyrone forward line in check.

Lockhart, who picked up the first of seven yellow cards shown by excellent referee Pat McEnaney following a dust-up with Canavan, did not put a foot wrong.

As for Canavan, he was dismissed on the half-hour when he appeared to retaliate to a deliberate block by Johnny McBride.

Canavan was already on a yellow after a tackle on Lockhart, but Mr McEnaney had no hesitation brandishing a straight red after a consultation with his touchline official.

Perfect start

At that stage Tyrone were trailing by a point and already playing catch-up football with Derry showing much more urgency than in their performance in the Ulster semi-final.

Enda Muldoon, who was proving a great target man, slotted over the opening point and another by big Anthony Tohill gave Derry the perfect start.

Tyrone's Stephen O'Neill who generally was a little awry with his shooting midway through the game, did get his side back into the game to level things up in the 15th minute.

At the break Derry were holding an 0-5 to 0-3 lead and deservedly so.

Tyrone did start the second half with more urgency with Ger Cavlan knocking over a point, but then everything turned pear-shaped for Art McRory's side.

First Tohill hammered over his second point and then came a goal out of blue for Derry.

There was a little controversy over the 47th minute goal which saw the ball just cross the line after Paddy Bradley and goalkeeper Finbar McConnell both competed for a high kick.

McConnell could have contested that he was fouled while Bradley just about stayed out of the area before the kick came in.

The goal stood after the umpire confirmed it had crossed the line and it pushed Derry to a 1-6 to 0-4 lead.

Tyrone had it all to do, and they did to their credit start to move more freely and find a little more space.

Eoin Gormley and a double from O'Neill pulled them right back into the game but the gap proved too much to close as Derry's miserly defence closed ranks again.

Tyrone new they were a beaten team before Tohill, Bradley and McBride added to their woes with further points. Revenge was sweet.
