UUJ win Sigerson Cup
![]() Boss Adrian McGuckin guided UUJ to the Sigerson Cup
Sigerson Cup final result: UUJ 1-14 1-9 UCD
Jordanstown withstood a late UCD fightback to claim their fourth Sigerson Cup title with a 1-14 to 1-9 victory at Scotstown on Wednesday. After producing some magnificent football, UUJ were cruising at 1-11 to 0-3 ahead midway through the second half. But the Dubliners summoned up a huge effort to move within three points of Jordanstown with only two minutes left. However, injury-time points from Ronan Sexton and the superb Paddy Bradley steadied UUJ nerves. UCD took the lead in the opening seconds with JP Casey pointing for the Dublin team. However, Jordanstown then hit five points in a row to lead 0-5 to 0-1 after 20 minutes with Paddy Bradley (two), Kevin Brady, Aidan O'Rourke and Michael Walsh the scorers.
Further Bradley and Jim McGuinness scores put UUJ six clear before Ciaran McManus scored UCD's second point in the 25th minute. McGuinness then added his second score of the match to leave UUJ 0-8 to 0-2 ahead after 28 minutes. The match seemed as good as over four minutes into the second half when Armagh county player John Toal hit a goal for UUJ. However, UCD kept battling and three unanswered points quickly followed by a 49th minute goal from Joe Byrne got the Dubliners back in the game. John Lynch's 58th minute point left only a goal between the teams but injury-time scores from Sexton and Bradley ensured huge Jordanstown jubiliation at the final whistle. Captain McGuinness The outstanding Bradley hit five points for the winners. Jordanstown's last Sigerson title came in 1991. Wednesday's victory keeps the Sigerson Cup in Ulster. Queen's won the title last year and Armagh defender Enda McNulty was among a number of UUJ players who were on that QUB team in 2000. Jordanstown captain, Donegal midfielder Jim McGuinness was winning his third Sigerson medal in four seasons. He captained Tralee to the title in 1999 having also played in the Kerry college's 1998 victory.
