Sainz secures 14th stage in Dakar
Carlos Sainz
Sainz took his fifth stage win of the Dakar rally
Carlos Sainz won the penultimate 14th stage of the Dakar Rally, but Stephane Peterhansel reinforced his lead in the overall standings after finishing 11th.

Spain's Sainz raced through the 576km route from Tambacounda to Senegal's capital, Dakar, in two hours 21 minutes and two seconds for a fifth stage win.

Brazilian Jean De Azevedo won the motorcycle section, while overall leader Cyril Despres finished fourth.

But Frenchman Eric Aubijoux, 42, died after suffering a seizure.

That fourth-placed finished extended Frenchman Despres's overall lead to more than 36 minutes over his closest rival, team-mate David Casteu.

And Peterhansel looks odds-on to make it a France double after extending his lead in the cars section to seven minutes, 16 seconds ahead of compatriot Luc Alphand.

The cross-continental race concludes on Sunday at Lac Rose, a lake outside Dakar.
