Put Panizzi on asphalt, and there are few to touch him
Gilles Panizzi has done little this year to alter his reputation as a man who can drive fast on asphalt, but not quite on the pace elsewhere.
Panizzi won three rallies in 2002 - more than anyone else bar world champion Marcus Gronholm - and in the process confirmed himself as a master on asphalt.
Peugeot have generally used Panizzi to devastating effect on such rallies to help them secure the manufacturers' crown.
Last season: 6th
But until a remarkable last-gap win in Catalunya he had failed to perform that role this season.
Perhaps that is why Peugeot have finally dispensed with his services.
Panizzi will move instead to Mitsubishi who have signed him to lead their assault on their return to the championship in 2004.
Whether he is a rounded-enough talent to fulfil that role remains to be seen.
