Coventry Bees joint manager Peter Oakes was not surprised with his side's Craven Shield first leg win over Lakeside on Thursday night.
The holders won 47-43 away despite Olly Allen pulling out early on.
Oakes told BBC Coventry & Warwickshire: "If you look at the last two months, we have been consistent.
"We have not won it but we have a decent lead that we can defend at home and it is far far better going back to Brandon with a lead than a deficit."
The second leg is at Brandon on 24 October.
