Nick Andrews, the man behind plans to try and revive the Oxford Cheetahs, says a challenge fixture in Reading is crucial to his long-term ambitions.
Andrews has arranged the meeting against Wimbledon at on 11 August.
He feels it remains an important showcase for the Cheetahs as they attempt to restore relations with the landlords at the Oxford Stadium.
Andrews told BBC Oxford: "If we can put on a really good show I can't see why they wouldn't let us back in for 2009."
The club have been out of action since its closure under former promoter Allen Trump, who failed to reach a rent agreement with the landlords at the Oxford Stadium.
