Oxfordshire teenager Bradley Smith continued his strong finish to the 125cc season with second place at the Australian Grand Prix.
The 18-year-old was pipped to victory on the last lap by Julian Simon, who is now crowned world champion.
"It has been a great race. The only disappointing thing is that the championship is over," said Smith.
"I gave it my best. I have extended my gap in second position and I have had four podiums in a row."
He added: "Great result from the bike, great performance from the team. We have to keep it up for the final two races and secure second [in the championship].
Smith - who rides for the Bancaja Aspar Aprilia - is yet to sign a contract for next season.
The 18-year old is seen as a highly desirable prospect both in the 125cc and Moto2 class for 2010.
