Suzuki have revealed that Spanish 250cc rider Alvaro Bautista has signed a two-year deal with their MotoGP team.

He won the 125cc world title in 2006, was runner-up in the 250cc championship in 2008 and, with six races to go, lies second in this year's 250cc title race.

The 24-year-old has won eight races in both the 125 and 250 classes.

His promotion comes after he finished third at the Czech Grand Prix, although he spoilt his day by crashing and damaging his bike attempting a wheelie.

A statement from Suzuki described Bautista as "one of the brightest young stars in Grand Prix racing".

Bautista's move will raise questions about the future of current Suzuki rider Chris Vermeulen, who is 10th in the MotoGP championship standings, one place behind veteran team-mate Loris Capirossi.

Fellow 250cc rider Marco Simoncelli has already agreed his move to MotoGP for next season, racing for the San Carlo Gresini Honda team.
