Rossi claims stunning Mugello win
Valentino Rossi
Rossi claimed his second win of the season
Defending champion Valentino Rossi beat Loris Capirossi in a thrilling cat-and-mouse duel to claim a memorable win in the Italian MotoGP at Mugello.

Rossi led until lap 14 when he went wide and slipped to fifth place, before battling back to come home ahead of Capirossi and Nicky Hayden.

Casey Stoner was in contention until lap nine when he flew over the handlebars in dramatic fashion.

Great Britain's James Ellison finished in 16th place.

The win was only the second of the season for Rossi, but it was his fifth successive win in the race and saw him rise to fifth place in the standings on 65 points.

"It was a huge battle with Capirossi. In the end I think we were both winners," said Rossi afterwards.

"I had some problems with the back of the bike, but I managed to handle them. This was an unforgettable race."

Capirossi and Hayden were also full of admiration for their opponents after such a close fight.

"I had to pick off my rivals one by one until I caught Valentino," said Capirossi.

"After that I did the best I could, but I'm happy to be second after such a battle."

"It really was a beautiful fight," added Hayden.

Capirossi's second place finish saw him go level with Hayden at the top of the standings on 99 points.

Marco Melandri, who finished sixth, slipped back to third on 89 points.
