Qatar to host MotoGP
World champion Valentino Rossi
Rossi could be racing in Qatar next season
Qatar will host a round of the MotoGP championship next season after signing a deal with Dorna Sports - the company that controls the races.

President of the Qatar motorcycle federation, Naser Bin Khalifa al-Ateiah, agreed a five-year deal to host the races with Dorna chief executive Carmelo Ezpeleta.

The first race is scheduled to take place in late 2004 but the deal depends on whether the planned race track meets FIM standards.

"The initial agreement gives Dorna the option to include the Qatar Grand Prix in the pre-calendar for 2004," a statement by Dorna said.

"But that is subject to final approval by the FIA of the racetrack that will be built close to Doha in the next few months."

Qatar could become the first Middle East nation to stage a MotoGP.

The move follows Formula One, which is staging its first Grand Prix in Bahrain next year.
