Bayliss closes in on title
Troy Bayliss
Bayliss was fastest in race one

Troy Bayliss rode his Ducati to victory in both races at the San Marino Grand Prix to extend his lead in the World Superbike Championship.

Colin Edwards was second on his Honda on both occasions, finishing 2.9 and then 3.3 seconds behind the defending champion.

The double triumph at the Santamonica circuit gave Bayliss, who has now won 13 of 16 races this season, 360 championship points.

Edwards is second on 311, with Britain's Neil Hodgson in third place on 194.

Hodgson, on another Ducati, edged Japan's Noriyuki Haga for third place in race one, with the places being reversed in the second.

"I had no problems, everything worked perfectly. From mid-race I was unchallenged," said Bayliss.

"Tyres were an important factor. For me, it was the toughest GP of the season."

The ninth round of the 13-event championship takes place at Laguna Seca in the United States on 14 July.
