Jenson Button will end his Formula 1 career as a McLaren driver after signing one of the longest and most lucrative contracts in the sport. Button, 31, is understood to have committed himself for at least another four years in a deal worth up to £50m.

Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso has set his sights on beating Jenson Button, Mark Webber and Lewis Hamilton to finish the season second in the championship to Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel. "Clearly, if one looks at the way recent races have gone, it will definitely not be easy," he said, "as my closest rivals seem to have that little bit extra in terms of car performance, but that does not mean it's a lost cause. We know we have to do everything perfectly if we want to reach our goal and we will be trying right to the very end."
