David Coulthard heads into the winter facing an uncertain future.

The Scot has lost his drive at McLaren to Juan Pablo Montoya and has not yet lined up a new job for 2005.

Coulthard's search for a new team has been hampered by an unconvincing season, even if he has again proved that he lacks for nothing in race pace.

His problem is that he has been inconsistent in qualifying, an echo of his career, during which he has rarely driven at his best throughout a year.

Coulthard has shown signs this season of resolving the qualifying problem that crippled him in 2003.

He is still not a match for Raikkonen in this area, but he seems to have at least proved able to do himself justice.

He clearly still has the ability to perform at the highest level, but his options appear to be narrowing all the time.
