Korean Grand Prix qualifying - as it happened

0739: I reckon that qualifying session sets us up beautifully for tomorrow's race. With title calculations out the window, the glory of victory will be the main motivation. Sarah Holt's take on the most interesting qualifying session of the season is up on the site. The live text will crank into life at 0530 BST tomorrow. See you there.

0733: A distinctly disgruntled Fernando Alonso faces up to the media after qualifying sixth behind Ferrari team-mate Felipe Massa despite having a new front wing on his car. BBC Sport pit-lane reporter Lee McKenzie asks him if that modification explains the difference. He pulls a face in response. "Maybe," he says. "I'm not extremely happy. Obviously we weren't good enough today."

0725: Mark Webber, down in fourth, refuses to divulge any more on the team tactic of taking the supersoft option in Q1. "We just wanted to get through," he tells BBC Sport's Lee McKenzie with a smirk. "Even in Q1?" "Yep." Rightio.

Jenson Button, who qualified third: "It's not perfect, but Lewis has been pretty great all weekend, tough to hold on to. I'm reasonably happy, but I really haven't got a clue what's going to happen in the race regarding tyre degredation on high fuel, so we'll see."

Sebastian Vettel, who qualified second: "I think McLaren were very, very competitive yesterday, they were a fair chunk ahead of everybody, including us. But once again we pushed them very very hard in qualifying and got very very close, closer than we expected. Also, we saved all our prime tyres so I think we are in a good position. Tyre wear will be crucial."

0718: It wasn't so much about what Lewis Hamilton said in his post-qualifying interview, as the way he said it. "I'm happy, I'm very happy. I'm very proud of what the team has been able to achieve over the last few races. But tomorrow is the day that really counts," he says in a deathly calm, downbeat tone.

0714: The front three drivers collect for a group photo and Hamilton stares grimly into the middle distance after little more than a cursory handshake with Vettel. He means business.

McLaren team principal Martin Whitmarsh: "We're here to win races, but pole position feels good if you haven't had it for a long time. Tomorrow is another day, and it will be a long race - ourselves, Red Bull, Ferrari, who knows, but both our guys fancy their chances. I'm sure this will cheer Lewis up, not as much as a race win would, but to be on pole, any driver wants that. Regarding the race, it's a little bit of an unknown how the tyres will survive tomorrow."

0711: Vettel's reaction on the team radio is also telling. He tells his crew that he is looking forward to the "better tyres" and he may be happy to sacrifice pole to keep three sets of prime nice and fresh for the race itself. What a front row battle to look forward to though.

0708: Hamilton climbs out of the car and marches slowly back to the garage with his helmet still in place. No salute to the crowd, no response to his engineer's congratulations over the radio, I think it is fair to say that he won't be happy just to take pole from this weekend.

0703: Button moves up into second, all eyes on Vettel as he crosses the line. Hamilton has held him off to take pole! Webber had a ropey old final lap and snaked off down the pit lane.

0701: Button fastest in the first sector. Interesting.

0700: The field return to the track. We have lost Nico Rosberg's Mercedes but gained the Force India of Paul Di Resta through the pit lane. Mark Webber's Red Bull is at the front of the queue of traffic and will have first crack at Hamilton's mark.

BBC F1 co-commentator David Coulthard: "It looked like the Hamilton of old, he was chucking the car into the corners."

0656: First blood to Hamilton. The Briton holds off the Red Bull rush with Vettel, 0.03 seconds behind in second and Webber in third. What will the reponse be from the Milton Keynes team?

0654: Vettel is lurking at the back of the quene of eight drivers poised to put in their first flying laps. The two Force India are sat in the garage and we may not see them if they opt to save rubber.

0650: Mercedes' Rosberg, closely tracked by McLaren's Hamilton, is first out of the pit lane.

0649: The heavyweights are sat on their stools waiting for the final-round bell. Hamilton has looked most likely to land a knockout blow on the Red Bulls so far this weekend.

0646: Toro Rosso's Alguersuari and Buemi join Schumacher in the group of eliminated drivers along with Kobayashi, Senna, Maldonado and Perez. Schumacher, unhappy with his car, was not out there fighting his corner as the flag dropped on Q2.

0644: They leave it late but Force India's Sutil and Di Resta pull themselves up to ninth and tenth respectively. Mercedes Michael Schumacher is the big name to fall victim of Q2.

0641: Felipe Massa is out and about attempting to shore up his seventh position and his hold on a top-10 spot. Both Force Indias are in line for elimination unless they can pull something out with a minute remaining.

BBC F1 commentator Martin Brundle: "Jenson Button hasn't been on pole since Monaco in 2009, 45 races ago. I would never, ever have believed that. He's won world championships in that time, which is a reminder that races are won on Sunday, not on Saturday."

0638: Schumacher is suffering for some vibration somewhere on his Mercedes but he puts a brave face on and, with the track to himself, clambers into ninth. Vitaly Petrov in his Renault is ahead of him.

0635: Vettel gets a little eager as he deploys DRS a early, spooking his Red Bull as he exits a corner. But his time of 1:37.285 puts him second and will surely be enough to earn him a pass to Q1.

0633: A puff of smoke from Hamilton's front right about halfway round, but apart from that it is a slick lap. He clocks 1:36.526 to take top spot ahead of Webber and Button.

0630: Lewis Hamilton heads out and his side of the McLaren garage have taken Red Bull's lead in giving their driver a set of supersofts to play with.

0629: Onwards and upwards as Q2 gets going. A bit of a phoney war as the front runners sit tight. Vettel's Red Bull still wearing supersoft tyres under the heated blankets.

0627: Behind Barrichello, it was the Lotus pair of Kovalainen and Trulli, followed by the Virgins of Glock and D'Ambrosio and the HRT duo of Liuzzi and Ricciardo at the back of the field.

0624: Tension in the Williams garage as Maldonando trumps Barrichello by a slender tenth of a second on his last lap to consigns his team-mate to a Q2 spent parked up. Tactics went a little awry there as the two colleagues had to turn on each other to scrap for their qualification survival.

0620: Maldonado drops back into drop-zone with Barrichello precariously perched in 17th.

0618: Barrichello is up into 14th while team-mate Maldonado moves up into 16th. Will that be enough to hold off the challenge of those beneath them and carry them through into Q2?

0617: Williams' Rubens Barrichello is in the drop-zone at the moment, but he is out on the tarmac attempting to haul himself to safety as I type.

BBC F1 commentator Martin Brundle: "Hamilton looks like he's got the edge on Button, and McLaren look like they have got the edge on the other teams."

0613: Strong stuff from McLaren's Hamilton again as he stays four tenths of a second clear of team-mate Jenson Button in second. Signs that this will be the fully revved-up Hamilton we see this weekend, rather than the oddly muted version that was in attendance in Japan.

BBC F1 commentator Martin Brundle: "Both Red Bulls are on the super-soft tyres. There's a smaller gap [in performance] between the option and prime tyres here, but seven-tenths of a second [per lap] is still an awful lot of time. And they've gone slowly. That's looking quite difficult to understand. That is strange."

0609: Curiouser and curiouser. The Red Bulls are off the pace set by McLaren's Lewis Hamilton with Webber fifth and Vettel sixth in the standings.

0608: Strange decision from the Red Bulls as both Vettel and Webber emerge on the supersoft tyre which they usually save for Q3. Let's see if a masterplan comes together.

0605: Renault's Vitaly Petrov is at the top of the standings, but locks up his front wheels and that time might need to see him all the way through this session as he heads back home for fresh rubber.

0603: An interesting point from BBC co-commentator David Coulthard as he points out that getting out early in Q1 and putting their cars on television is important for the teams at the back of the pack to secure some exposure for their much-needed sponsors.

BBC F1 commentator Martin Brundle: "Can Red Bull become the first team since Ferrari in 1952 to take every pole position of the season?"
In 1952, incidentally, there were just eight Grands Prix.
0600: We are go and Bruno Senna is the first man out in his Renault.

0555: Qualifying is looming just five minutes away, time to load up the driver tracker to keep across where you favoured man is on track.

BBC Sport's Andrew Benson: ""Interesting admission from Ferrari team boss Stefano Domenicali on BBC One there. Domenicali has recently admitted that their season unravelled when the upgrade they planned for Belgium and Italy actually made the car worse. Jake Humphrey asked him how concerned he was about that at a time when they needed everything just so as they design next year's car. Domenicali replied: 'To be honest, the area that we don't really understand on this year's car won't be there next year.' That's a reference to the blown diffusers which have dominated technical development this year and which are banned in 2012. It makes sense in the context of Ferrari's only win this year being at Silverstone, when blown diffusers were severely restricted for just one race."

0548: Less than a year ago, Hulkenberg was sitting on pole at the Brazilian Grand Prix. Might he start the 2012 season in a regular seat?

0546: Nico Hulkenberg, reserve driver at Force India, is posed an interview googly by David Coulthard. Which of the team's regular drivers, Adrian Sutil and Paul di Resta, does he deserve to replace? "I don't care, I just want to drive," Hulkenburg replies with a dead straight bat.

0541: The constructors' championship could follow the driver's title for Red Bull this weekend, but McLaren team boss Martin Whitmarsh insists that he is focussed on winning a few more race battles on track rather than clawing back that yawning gap in the points war. "We have won five races this season and if we could win nine that would be some consolation. Poles are nice to have, but race wins are why we're here. We're not going to overly compromise our set-up just to try and get pole position," he says.

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner: "I haven't had to say anything to keep the team motivated. They know the expectation and they know the target, which is now to retain the constructors' title. We very much want to finish the season in the manner in which we have conducted it so far."

BBC Sport's Sarah Holt in Yeongam: "The McLarens made a lap of the testing Hermann Tilke designed circuit look incredibly easy as Jenson Button led Lewis Hamilton in a one-two in final practice. But I have first-hand experience to prove it's harder than it looks! Virgin Racing invited members of the media to their hospitality here to try their hand at two hot laps of the circuit on a computer. I crashed coming out of the garage on my first attempt - I blame those pit-lane warning lights not being put in place - and then I hit the barriers hard at the first corner on my second go. BBC 5 live commentator David Croft has since christened me 'No Time dot com'. But it just goes to show that a perfect, high-speed lap - even on a computer screen - isn't as easy as it seems!"

0530: One of the pinch-points on the circuit has been the exit from the pit lane where Mercedes Nico Rosberg collided with Toro Rosso's Jaime Alguersuari in practice on Friday. A new lights system has since been introduced, but there will be a few cameras trained on that part of the track today and especially, given the high number of pit stops expected, tomorrow.

BBC Sport's Sarah Holt in Yeongam: "Who wants to see a close qualifying battle today? Rain and then a stubborn Jamie Alguersuari meant the man to beat, Sebastian Vettel, hasn't shown his hand yet. Red Bull's double world champ is chasing his 14th pole position, which would equal the record for a season set by Nigel Mansell for Williams in 1992. McLaren ran Red Bull close at the last race in Suzuka, even though Lewis Hamilton ran out of time to set a second fast lap, and they have shown some pace in mixed conditions in practice. Fernando Alonso, who won in Korea last year, was hanging onto the coat tails of the McLarens and Mark Webber's Red Bull in final practice but he reckons the Ferrari's inability to warm up its tyres quickly over a single lap could hamper them in the fight for pole."

BBC F1 co-commentator David Coulthard, watching the Red Bull mechanics busy at work on Sebastian Vettel's car, invents a new verb: "These guys have no check lists, it's all done from memory. It's like synchronised mechanic-ing before the cars go out."

0521: The Red Bull pit crew have the nose off Sebastian Vettel's car, performing a little keyhole surgery. Could those tweaks and a patch of clear road be the medicine to perk up his performance from final practice?

BBC Sport's Sarah Holt in Yeongam: "Hello again. It's my second visit to South Korea but I'm still learning about the nuances of its cuisine and culture. Mokpo is a sprawling, laid-back port city and there's plenty to explore. So it sounds a bit unexciting to say that last night we ventured into a pedestrianised high street peppered with neon lights and brightly-lit shop fronts. After a dinner in a restaurant trimmed with paper lanterns, I'm hoping that someone might be able to help me with a bit of culinary conundrum. All the diners were served a plate of eggs frying on a hot plate as an appetiser. Can anyone tell me if this is a usual custom, please? Thanking you in advance."

0507: It wouldn't be Formula 1 without the whiff of political intrigue would it? Coverage on BBC One has just got under way with Jake Humphrey and David Coulthard talking us through some of the smashes and crashes from last season's race. A quick manual refresh should keep the video coverage on the top of this page, if it is not there already, for UK users.

BBC Sport's Andrew Benson: " There have been rumblings since the start of the year over F1's so-called Resource Restriction Agreement. There are accusing fingers pointing at Red Bull and Mercedes over whether they have exceeded the limits on staff/external/spend/aerodynamics research allowed in the RRA. Both deny any wrongdoing and McLaren team principal Martin Whitmarsh, who acts as the chairman of teams' umbrella group Fota, has emphasised that 'there has been no evidence of a breach of the RRA'. The disagreement was emphasised by Red Bull boss Christian Horner and his Mercedes counterpart Ross Brawn disagreeing - ever so politely - in a news conference on Friday. Horner talked about the RRA running out at the end of 2012, with Brawn countering: 'Christian commented, quite rightly, that the agreement's coming to an end. Well, we're working on an agreement that we thought we already had, which doesn't end for several years.' Brawn added that the RRA was 'not structured well enough yet to have the controls and checks and reassurances in place that gives everybody comfort and [that] leads to the innuendo and accusations. It has to be much more robust in how it's controlled, monitored, policed, because it is a performance differentiator.' Bosses will discuss it in their Sunday morning meeting, but no one's holding their breath for a consensus."

0458: Not everyone in the paddock will be supporting the German, F1's youngest double world champion, on his latest landmark chase though.

0455: Should Vettel claim the top slot again this afternoon, he would match the 13 achieved by Ayrton Senna (in 1988 and 89) and Alain Prost (1993). The record for a single season is 14 by Nigel Mansell is 1992. Races in India, Abu Dhabi and Brazil follow after this weekend to give the world champion another three opportunities to move up in amongst those celebrated names.

0450: Of the many ways that Sebastian Vettel has dominated this season, his ability to consistently flatten the field with his single-lap speed on a Saturday might be the most impressive. He has 12 out of a possible 15 poles.

0445: It's a one-stop strategy for me today. Having taken on board a touch of extra fuel, I will be running through to the end of qualifying now. The shoot-out, shake-down, call it what you will, gets under way at 0600 BST.

0420: Right, Sarah Holt's report on final practice is up on the site which signals a quick break for us all. I will be back in the hot seat at around about 0445 BST.

0418: Those final gaps back to the Red Bulls from Button are 0.813 for Webber and a relatively whopping 2.785 seconds for Vettel. There were a few glimmers from Vettel though who put in some swift sector times, but could not string three together to impose himself at the front.

McLaren's Jenson Button is fastest in final practice for the Korean Grand Prix

0403: Canny stuff from Button who keeps his McLaren out of the traffic and then fires in a lap of 1:36.910 with his last shot to snatch the lead from Hamilton who is getting unecessarily involved with Mercedes Schumacher.

0400: More aggravation for Vettel as Alguersuari again appears in his sights. The Toro Rosso stands his ground and earns himself a wave of a clenched fist from the world champion as Vettel finally hammers past on the home straight.

0357: Vettel goes quickest of anyone in the first sector, but then finds himself penned in by Jaime Alguersuari's Toro Rosso and he is forced to abandon his flying lap.

0356: Jenson Button, shod in supersofts, edges in front of Hamilton at the front of the pack, ducking under his McLaren team-mate's time. Back comes Hamilton to take a half-second chomp out of Button's best and regain the lead. Still underwhelming stuff from Red Bull as Vettel briefly locks up his supersofts.

BBC F1 pit-lane commentator Ted Kravitz: "Paranoia has set in at Ferrari, where the mechanics have formed a human wall to prevent people seeing Fernando Alonso's new front wing. It's pretty childish - all the other teams will have had an extremely good look already."

0348: More than two seconds separate Vettel's Red Bull back in eighth from McLaren's Hamilton. Vettel's team-mate Mark Webber is down in 13th. Never mind close to their collective chest, those cards are practically under the Red Bull chin.

BBC Sport's Sarah Holt in Yeongam: "The team bosses are meeting on Sunday morning in South Korea for a pow-wow to discuss a few lingering concerns. On the agenda will be F1's planned return to Bahrain next April, in the wake of reports of skirmishes between rival groups following civil unrest in the gulf kingdom last spring. Red Bull boss Christian Horner said this weekend: 'It's concerning when you hear the reports. I have complete faith in [F1 supremo] Bernie Ecclestone and the governing body in the event of a difficult decision having to be made. We will go and perform where those guys say it is safe to be.' There is also the thorny topic of the resource restriction agreement, which boss Andrew Benson has more on."

BBC F1 pit-lane commentator Ted Kravitz: "Vettel flat-spotted his front right tyre, that's where the vibration he was complaining about was coming from, but those tyres are finished now so no longer a problem."

0343: Button and Hamilton trade blows at the front of the field with the latter regaining the lead with a 1:37.595. More impressive stuff from McLaren, but we have seen Red Bull keep their cards close to their chest until it comes to qualifying before this season.

BBC Radio 5 live F1 summariser Maurice Hamilton: ""Sebastian Vettel has got a star inside the cockpit for every win he's had this season, that's nine now. Lotus used to do that and Williams too - I remember Carlos Reutemann doing it." Reutemann is now a prominent politician in his native Argentina.

0337: Button climbs back ahead of the two Ferraris and into second, while McLaren team-mate Lewis Hamilton, still on softs, polishes his lead on the rest of the the field as he improves on his best by 0.190 seconds.

BBC Radio 5 live F1 summariser Maurice Hamilton: "When we arrived this morning, there were Red Bull doing their 20 pit-stop practices as usual. They are a team which leaves nothing to chance."

0333: Vettel, sitting in seventh, reports that he is suffering from vibration from somewhere within his Red Bull. The world champion has completed 14 laps on the harder compound, more than anyone else in the field.

0330: Renault's Bruno Senna is back out on the supersoft tyres, half an hour remaining.

BBC Sport's Sarah Holt in Yeongam: "Fernando Alonso reckons he's going to attack each of the next four races as if it was the first race of the season. But despite his enthusiasm the Ferrari ace has downplayed his chances of challenging Red Bull for pole position because of a familiar problem with tyres over a single lap. 'We take too many laps to get the right performance and temperature and in that lap the tyre is not in good shape anymore,' he explained. 'For the race maybe this will be an advantage as we can be consistent but sure for qualifying this is a penalty. When we are on the grid we want to be on the first row of the grid, we do not like to see people in front of us.' Ferrari will give a new front wing a run out in final practice after they said they couldn't see if it made any difference during a wet Friday."

0327: Of the top six drivers, only Ferrari's Fernando Alonso is still out on track.

0325: HRT's Daniel Ricciardo is leaking a mysterious liquid as he heads back into the pits. BBC pit-lane commentator Ted Kravitz, like a fine wine connoisseur, gets down to sniff in the fumes and concludes that it is radiator fluid. The Red Bull pit crew are out sharpish to mop it up as it is in the path of where their drivers will be turning in.

0322: Felipe Massa splits the Mclaren pair with his Ferrari, although he is still more than a second back from Hamilton.

0320: McLarens out on track and, like yesterday, they find some early pace. Hamilton takes the fastest lap with a 1:38.210 with Button second best, 1.3 seconds back from his team-mate.

Pit stop
0317: Senna has spun his Renault at the end of his lap as he strays onto the astro turf. He has clipped his front wing against the wall and it will need replacing forthwith. The Brazilian creeps against the flow of traffic before pulling a 180 degree turn. New tyres might be needed as well as BBC pit-lane commentator Ted Kravitz spots flat spots.

0313: Bruno Senna shows the back of his hand to a dawdling Toro Rosso as he hammers round to slot his Renault into fifth place. Meanwhile Sebastian Vettel leapfrogs Red Bull team-mate Mark Webber at the top of the standings.

0309: A rash of early times as Nico Rosberg guides his Williams to the top of the timing charts, ahead of the Red Bulls or Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel. Michael Schumacher is the fourth driver to clock a time. Towels down on loungers early doors here.

0305: McLaren's Jenson Button has a new chassis after suffering a damaged engine mount yesterday. The chassis is winging its way back to Woking for further inspection reports BBC pit-lane reporter Natalie Pinkham.

0303: Most of the runners, including Ferrari's Fernando Alonso, are sporting a yellow trim on their Pirelli tyres, denoting the soft tyre, for their opening laps.

0300: To emphasis Sarah's point, Vettel is sat in his Red Bull pulling on his gloves, his mechanics are poised to peel off the tyre warmers. Final practice gets under way.

BBC Sport's Sarah Holt in Yeongam: "After the briefest of time off in Tokyo to celebrate winning his second world title, Sebastian Vettel got back down to business on a wet track in Korea. I'm starting to wonder if the 24-year-old isn't a bit of a workaholic as there appears to have been no let up in his work-rate and even he said the pressure was back on as he targets his 10th win of the season. 'We didn't get a chance to try the slick tyres, so we'll find out in the race I guess,' he said. 'It's a tough track here, even though you have a long straight, there's hardly any rest after that, so it's not easy. The car feels OK though and that's important.'"

0258: First sighting of the track and BBC 5 live commentator David Croft reports that race director Charlie Whiting has warned the teams that the entrance to the pit lane is still a little damp.

Slight time translation: 1300 in Korea is 0500 BST here, 1700 is 0900 BST. FP3 gets under way at 0300 our time, qualifying at 0600. All clear?

BBC Sport's Sarah Holt in Yeongam: "After Nico Rosberg collided with Jaime Alguersuari's Toro Rosso when his Mercedes re-emerged from the pit lane, the FIA have now introduced a warning system to prevent similar accidents happening over the rest of the weekend. The drivers complained about the pit-lane exit during a meeting with FIA safety delegate Charlie Whiting on Friday, saying they would prefer the pit to merge at the second rather than the first corner. But as it's too late to make this change to the track the governing body have decided to implement a system of lights on the straight and at the end of the pit lane to make it clear when a car is coming out of the pits. Squeaky clean Rosberg escaped punishment for his part in the collision on account of his good record in Formula 1 but he and Mercedes were still fined £6,300 for turning up late to explain what had happened to the stewards."

0242: Hamilton will be one of the drivers to watch today. So far his season has been splattered with accidents and controversy, but never lacked speed. Until Suzuka. Both commentary box producer Mark Hughes and commentator BBC F1 commentator Martin Brundle have both flagged up concerns over his form in Japan.

BBC Sport's Sarah Holt in Yeongam: "Morning from Mokpo. It's a fairly cool start to the day but the sun is sitting in a pale blue sky. That's good news for the 24 drivers who are desperate for some dry running to assess just how their car is suited to the Yeongam circuit, especially on the soft and super-soft tyres available this weekend, which supplier Pirelli admits is an 'aggressive' choice, and has led to predictions of as many as four pit stops in the race. After two miserably, wet sessions most of them were calling Friday a bit of a waste of time. Even McLaren weren't wholly satisfied despite Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button setting the fastest times. 'Third practice is going to be very important because nobody knows how the cars behave on high fuel and dry tyres,' said Button. 'There's a lot more to understand.'"
