The new Lotus Formula 1 team have appointed an ex-general manager at Malaysian car company Proton as their new chief executive.

Riad Asmat worked for the state-owned car firm since 2006, overseeing their involvement in the A1 GP series.

"I'm confident that his knowledge of motorsport coupled with vast experience will contribute to success," said team principal Tony Fernandes.

The team are developing their new car ahead of the 2010 season.
