How Alonso won the title
Schumacher (left) bids farewell as Alonso celebrates his second title
Sao Paulo, 22 October 2006

Fernando Alonso - 134 points
Michael Schumacher - 121 points

After such a rollercoaster season, the final title-deciding race was unlikely to be straightforward and Brazil delivered on that front.

After mechanical problems saw Schumacher start from 10th on the grid, the German climbed to fifth before a rear puncture all but ended his slim title hopes.

Schumacher refused to give up, manfully battling back to finish fourth, but Alonso's second place was more than enough to seal his second straight championship.
