How Alonso won the title
Fernando Alonso claims victory in the opening race in Bahrain
Bahrain, 12 March 2006

Fernando Alonso - 10 points
Michael Schumacher - 8 points

The opening race of the season saw Renault carrying on where they left off in 2005.

Alonso began his world title defence in style, coming from fourth on the grid to snatch the lead from Schumacher and fend the Ferrari driver off to win the Bahrain Grand Prix.

Although the result suggested a tense championship battle would ensue, Schumacher was to fall badly behind in the next two races.
