Britain and Honda's Jenson Button was the quickest of the race drivers in Friday practice, but most competitors were driving well within their limits.

Alonso's Renault team-mate Giancarlo Fisichella won at Albert Park last year, is coming off a win at the Malaysian Grand Prix and should be pushing for a place on the front row of the grid.

Seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher was sixth fastest in Friday practice, but is making positive noises ahead of the race proper.
