Latest updates (all times BST):

1406: Schumacher puts in a last-ditch attempt to usurp Alonso's time but crosses the line in 1:14.970 to leave an all-Renault front row as he finishes behind Fisichella.

1402: Schumacher's Ferrari seems to be struggling with new tyres as he fails to challenge Renault's Alonso and Fisichella. Defending world champion Alonso looks to have consolidated his claim on pole with 1:14.648.

1358: The top-10 shoot-out gathers pace as the clock ticks down and the drivers begin their hot-laps. Alonso is the first to post a blistering time of 1:14.875.

1346: The final 20-minute session is under way with the top contenders likely to use the first few laps to burn off fuel before making their bid for pole-position glory.

1341: Montoya is the big scalp of the second session as his time of 1:15.801 is only good enough for 12th place. He is eliminated along with Mark Webber, Nico Rosberg, Jacques Villeneuve, Christian Klien and Vitantonio Luizzi.

Alonso posts the fastest time of the session with 1:14.637, while Nick Heidfeld's 1:15.468 is the cut-off point in 10th.

1336: The drivers at the bottom end of the timesheet are starting to feel the pressure with McLaren's Juan Pablo Montoya looking dangerously close to elimination, despite new tyres.

1333: British Honda driver Button feels the benefit of new tyres as he posts a blistering time of 1:15.150.

1325: The second 15-minute session has started with Jacques Villeneuve first on the track with a respectable time of 1:16.349.

1318: After a slight delay the first qualifying period comes to an end with Scott Speed, Tiago Monteiro, Christian Albers, Takuma Sato, Franck Montagny and David Coulthard finishing slowest and taking places 17-22. 1:16.3 was the cut-off point.

1309: David Coulthard's hopes of a successful 200th race start suffer a major blow as the Scot spins off the track on turn three.

1300: The first period of qualifying is under way with cars going out to start their warm-ups. The track temperature is 31C and rising.

1230: With 30 minutes to go before the start of qualifying, the air temperature is 24C. The weather is sunny with humidity of 44%.

Ferrari's Michael Schumacher will be looking to continue his run of form after notching up the fastest time in Saturday morning practice at the Barcelona circuit.

The German clocked one minute 15.658 seconds in Saturday's last practice, while defending champion Fernando Alonso's was eighth quickest in his Renault after putting in significantly less laps.

Alonso, 13 points clear of Schumacher in the standings after five races, is seeking to become the first Spaniard to win at home.

But his Ferrari rival has won six times at the Circuit de Catalunya and is chasing his third victory in a row after triumphing at Imola and Nuerburgring.

Barcelona also sees Briton David Coulthard, sixth in final practice, start his 200th race on Sunday at the same circuit where he made his debut in 1994.
