0952: Raikkonen takes pole for the second race in a row. Toyota's Trulli, so impressive on Saturday, drops back to fifth after a slow final section. Mark Webber's Williams will be alongside Raikkonen on the front row.

0951: Disappointment for Alonso and his adoring crowd as the Spaniard not only fails to beat Raikkonen's combined time, but drops behind Webber too.

0948: Raikkonen goes quickest in his McLaren and as he finishes his lap, the Barcelona crowd erupts to welcome Fernando Alonso onto the track.

0944: The tension mounts in Barcelona as Toyota's Ralf Schumacher emerges from the pits - but he cannot beat Webber's hugely impressive time. McLaren's Kimi Raikkonen is next.

0941: Williams' Nick Heidfeld, who has also been given a 10-place grid penalty, decides not to run in the second session and will join Barrichello's Ferrari on the back of the grid.

0940: Mark Webber goes quickest. Are Williams running a lighter fuel load?

0937: Schumacher's Ferrari is thought to be running with a heavier fuel load in order to have a longer first stint in the race and the German makes no improvement on his position yesterday.

0935: Michael Schumacher emerges from the pits as Renault's Giancarlo Fisichella takes over at the top of the current grid placings.

0930: Ferrari's Rubens Barrichello, who has already lost 10 places on the grid for changing his engine, decides not to compete in final qualifying so will definitely start at the back.

0929: Montoya has already made up two places on his Saturday position as Red Bull's David Coulthard slots in behind him.

0924: Juan Pablo Montoya, returning to action after breaking a bone in his shoulder, posts a good time of one minute 17.5 seconds - one and a half seconds quicker than any other driver so far.

0917: Sauber's Jacques Villeneuve looks to make up for a disappointing performance on Saturday, and beats the fastest time so far by over three seconds.

0912: Monteiro's Jordan team-mate Narain Karthikeyan restarts his lap after the delay to clean the oil from the finishing straight.

0906: The engine on Tiago Monteiro's Jordan blows up as he crosses the line. The Portuguese is sure to receive a penalty which will see him start on the back of the grid. The red flags are out as officials check for oil on the track.

0900: Minardi's Patrick Friesacher gets final qualifying under way at a sunny and dry Circuit de Catalunya.

There promises to be a thrilling battle for pole position on Sunday morning at the Circuit de Catalunya.

Qualifying specialist Jarno Trulli is on provisional pole in his Toyota after a brilliant display in first qualifying.

However, the Barcelona crowd will be willing on championship leader Fernando Alonso, who was just 0.016 seconds slower in his Renault.

McLaren's Kimi Raikkonen (0.024 adrift) and Toyota's Ralf Schumacher (0.075 back) are hot on their heels.

World champion Michael Schumacher will be desperate to improve on a disappointing seventh.

Grid positions are decided by adding together times from the two sessions.
