There promises to be a tight battle for pole position on Sunday morning with McLaren driver Kimi Raikkonen only 0.003 seconds ahead of world championship leader Fernando Alonso's Renault after first qualifying.
Michael Schumacher is also in the reckoning on Ferrari's home track after setting third fastest time, 0.374secs behind Raikkonen.
But the world champion will also have to watch out for Williams driver Mark Webber and BAR's Jenson Button, who are 0.2secs behind him.
Button produced his best qualifying performance of a so-far disappointing year on Saturday.
Grid positions are decided by adding together times from the two sessions.
