Reigning world champion Michael Schumacher will start on pole for Sunday's European Grand Prix.
Schumacher's 60th pole of his career was achieved as he went round the Nurburgring over half a second ahead of BAR-Honda's Takuma Sato.
Renault's Jarno Trulli clinched third place on the grid, while Britain's Jenson Button qualified fifth.
Briton David Coulthard will start from the back after his McLaren stopped on the circuit in the first session.
After problems in Monaco last week and in practice for this weekend's race, Schumacher made a superb recovery to blitz the field
His lap of one minute 28.351 secured his fifth pole in seven starts this season.
Schumacher, who limped out of the Monaco GP after 43 laps following a run-in with Juan Pablo Montoya, was delighted.
He said: "It's good to get back in the rhythm and forget about last week.
"You can't change it anyway. I am looking forward to the race after what happened in
Monaco."
Sato became the first Japanese driver to secure a front row start, while McLaren's Kimi Raikkonen completes the second row alongside Trulli.
Sato said: "After qualifying third in Barcelona I wanted to be on the front
row.
"The team have done a fantastic job,we achieved what we wanted and I'm looking forward to going side by side with the competitors."
