However it is Schumacher's day as second place secures an incredible seventh driver's championship.

Lap 43: Raikkonen is determined to collect his first win of the season as he scorches his way around the track for a new lap record. Schumacher remains in second and surely now is ready to be crowned champion.

Coulthard puts in a brave performance and overtakes Panis for seventh place.

Lap 41: Coulthard is able to pit and rejoins the race in 10th place after quick repairs to his front wing but Toyota's Zonta, who is riding in fourth, suffers a heartbreaking engine blow-out.

Lap 40: The introduction of the safety car allows Schumacher to close the gap again on leader Raikkonen.

Lap 38: Coulthard, who has moved up to eighth, smashes into the back of Klien and into the barriers in a horrific looking crash. The safety car is brought out yet again.

Lap 37: Montoya is forced into the pits as a punctured tyre claims another victim. The pit crew try to rescue the situation but Montoya switches off the engine.

Lap 36: Raikkonen keeps his advantage over Schumacher, stretching his advantage to 1.6 seconds. Coulthard moves up to ninth.

Lap 35: Raikkonen teases the rest of the field as the safety car approaches the start/finish line, slowing the pace down to a crawl.

However he pushes down the throttle to take a jump on his opponents to maintain his lead while Klien takes eighth from Panis.

Lap 33: Schumacher will be champion if he finishes the race in the second place he occupies now - he only needs to score two more points than team-mate Barrichello, who is fourth.

Lap 31: Third-placed Pizzonia pulls off the track at La Source with a car failure and is out of the race. The safety car is still out there.

Lap 30: Button suffers a tyre failure in his rear right at the fastest part of the track and spins out of the race. He collects the Minardi of Baumgartner and both men are out of the race. The safety car is deployed

Schumacher pits and loses the lead to Raikkonen, but the German's 12-second deficit has been wiped out by the safety car.

Lap 29: Raikkonen pits for fuel and tyres in the McLaren - he is unlikely to stop again. He gets out in second place ahead of Pizzonia. Montoya also pits from fourth.

Lap 28: Schumacher is beginning to eat into Raikkonen's lead. He sets the fastest lap of the race to reduce Raikkonen's lead to 12.1secs. Pizzonia is holding off team-mate Montoya for third place.

Lap 25: Raikkonen extends his lead by a further 0.6secs to be 13.2secs ahead of Schumacher as Fisichella makes a pit stop from sixth place.

Lap 24: Raikkonen gains some time on Schumacher and now leads by 12.5secs, with the Ferrari a similar margin ahead of Pizzonia.

Lap 23: Trulli pits, but the team make no repairs to the car despite his collision with Montoya. Leader Raikkonen is 11.9secs ahead of Schumacher. Barrichello pits from fifth place.

Lap 22: Barrichello passes Fisichella for fifth place at Les Combes. And Fisichella loses sixth to Button at the Bus Stop.

Lap 21: Button pits and comes out seventh. The Montoya-Trulli incident is to be investigated by the stewards at the end of the race.

Lap 20: Fisichella runs wide at the Fagnes chicane and loses some of his car's aerodynamic aids. Montoya tries the same move on Trulli as he pulled on Schumacher, but the two collide. Trulli spins and Montoya loses a place to Pizzonia.

Lap 19: Trulli is lapping relatively slowly and appears to have a problem. He is now under pressure from Massa and Montoya. Massa pits. Raikkonen has a 4.7secs lead over Button.

Lap 18: Schumacher takes third place from Trulli at the Bus Stop chicane.

Lap 16: Pizzonia pits from the lead and Raikkonen resumes his position at the head of the field, more than 12 seconds ahead of Schumacher.

Lap 15: Schumacher is closing on leader Montoya, who pits at the end of the lap. Schumacher pits. He loses the de facto lead to Raikkonen, but comes out ahead of Montoya.

Lap 14: Barrichello, who dropped to the back after being hit by Webber on the first lap, is challenging Panis for 10th place. Fisichella pits from fourth place.

Leader Montoya pits and is passed by Massa as he exits the pits. The Williams driver had to back off as Massa refused to yield through Eau Rouge.

Lap 13: Leader Raikkonen stops for fuel and tyres.

Lap 12: Alonso spins at Les Combes and loses the lead to Raikkonen. He goes off again at Rivage, apparently because of an oil leak spilling onto his rear tyres. Coulthard has a puncture out at the back of the circuit but makes it back to the pits.

Lap 10: The Renault pit crew are ready for one of their drivers - and leader Trulli comes into the pits. He rejoins in ninth place behind Button.

Lap nine: Trulli, Alonso and Raikkonen are circulating together, with Coulthard just over three seconds behind. Klien pits for fuel and tyres in the Jaguar.

Lap eight: Raikkonen has closed up to the two leading Renaults. Schumacher, who lost a lot of ground in the early laps after the safety car pulled off, is now holding Montoya's Williams.

Lap seven: Alonso is right behind Trulli and has a look inside his team-mate into Les Combes but backs off.

Lap six: Raikkonen passes team-mate Coulthard into Les Combes and moves up to third, and sets fastest lap.

Lap five: Raikkonen passes Schumacher into Eau Rouge and the Ferrari driver comes under attack from Montoya at Les Combes, but fends the Williams off. Montoya passes Schumacher in a brilliant move around the outside of the Bus Stop chicane.

Lap four: The safety car pulls off at the end of the lap.

Lap three: Barrichello leaves the pits in his repaired Ferrari just in time to prevent himself losing a lap. He should have time to rejoin the back of the pack before the race is restarted.

Lap two: As the field circulates behind the safety car while the debris at Eau Rouge is cleared, Barrichello and Massa pit again. Barrichello is having a new rear wing fitted.

Lap one: Schumacher is beaten away by both Alonso and Coulthard and is down to fourth place at the exit of La Source hairpin. Mark Webber's Jaguar loses its front wing after a collision with Massa's Sauber at the hairpin.

Takuma Sato spins at Eau Rouge and the Jordan of Pantano and Minardi of Bruni collide at the top of the hill at the exit of Raidillon. The saftey car has been deployed.

Sato's car crashed after a collision with Webber as they went through Eau Rouge, and both cars are out of the race.

Button pits for a new nose cone after his car was damaged in the melee at Eau Rouge.

Massa, Baumgartner, Barrichello, Heidfeld and Panis also visit the pits.

1300: Jarno Trulli's Renault leads the field away on the formation lap without incident.
