BAR said he would be used at tests between the season-ending Chinese, Japanese and Brazilian races to ease the load on their race drivers.
Bernoldi, who raced for the now-defunct Arrows team in 2001-2, said: "This is a fantastic opportunity for me.
"I still have a lot to prove in F1 and I have a very important job for BAR."
