Davidson completes rapid rise
Anthony Davidson testing for BAR
Davidson has been BAR's test driver for two years
Anthony Davidson may be behind karting rival Jenson Button and former team-mate Takuma Sato in making his Formula One debut, but he is still one of motor racing's hottest young properties.

Davidson's drive for Minardi in Hungary will come just three years after he made his first appearance in a single-seater.

He finished third in the Formula Ford Zetec Series and also won the prestigious Formula Ford Winter Series in 2000.

In two seasons as test driver with British American Racing (BAR), Davidson has covered over 12,000 km in a Formula One car, and has been the team's reserve driver this season.

BAR have been happy to allow the 23-year-old to gain race experience, releasing him from testing duties for what is initially a two-race contract with Minardi.

Like many Formula One stars, Davidson developed his racing skills in karting, where he was runner-up in the 1996 European Karting Championship and 1997 Asian Karting champion.

The Hemel Hempstead driver finished second last season in the British Formula 3 behind Sato.

And he could have joined the Japanese driver at Jordan last month after Giancarlo Fisichella's crash in France.

He had a seat fitting several days before the German Grand Prix, only to see Fisichella make a remarkably rapid recovery.

His challenges will not end with a seat in the top tier, though, as he fills the seat vacated by the out-of-form Alex Yoong.

Although Minardi have improved massively on last year's showing - when they failed to gain a single point - Davidson is far from a certainty to qualify at Hungaroring.

He will benefit from sharing a garage with highly-rated Australian Mark Webber.

But a good showing in these two races may not guarantee Davidson a seat for next year even if, as expected, Webber moves to a more powerful team.

The Briton is currently under contract to BAR until 2006, and is expected to return to testing duties after the Belgian Grand Prix.
