1300: Montoya is the first man to go under one minute 12 seconds. He is on pole as Michael Schumacher narrowly fails to eclipse the Colombian's time. The German is in second place, behind by two hundredths of a second.

1259: Montoya sets the fastest first sector time of the day.

1258: Raikkonen improves to 1:12.244 and claims third.

1257: Barrichello drives his quickest lap of the day to move into second.

1254: The first of the possible pole sitters, Rubens Barrichello begins his final attack. He will be desperately trying to improve on his current fourth place.

1253: Jaguar's better showing continues as Irvine moves up to ninth position.

1252: With his slowest run of the day, Button completes his qualifying. He will line up for tomorrow's race in seventh place at best.

1248: The reigning champion Schumacher fails to beat Montoya's time - despite setting the fastest middle sector time during his lap.

1246: Only half a second separates the top six drivers. Michael Schumacher is back on track attempting to reclaim pole position.

1242: Montoya takes pole with a lap time just over a tenth of a second quicker than Michael Schumacher's best. The time to beat is 1:12.117.

1240: There is only one second separating the eighth and 17th placed drivers.

1236: Button finds a little extra speed and moves up one position to sixth. He knows he has a point to prove and he is responding.

1231: Kimi Raikkonen is outpacing his McLaren team-mate Couthard. The Finn drives a superb lap to leap into third place behind the Ferrari of Michael Schumacher and Montoya's Williams.

1230: With his first lap discounted, Michael Schumacher takes pole with his second. He records 1:12.287 to set the pace.

1228: Montoya reclaims pole with a lap of 1:12.346. The Colombian has consistently been the fastest driver in qualification this season.

1226: Jenson Button records the fourth-fastest lap. Renault are set to confirm the Briton will be leaving at the end of the season, and he will want to perform well to show his ability.

1224: Irvine, who may be retiring at the end of the season, continues his good showing as he moves up to sixth.

1223: Barrichello takes the provisional pole with a lap of 1:12.552.

1221: David Coulthard takes his McLaren round in 1:12.933 - good enough for third.

1218: Just as he looks set to smash the qualifying record, Michael Schumacher loses control through the chicane and drives onto the gravel track.

1217: Michael Schumacher, who could clinch the championship this weekend, begins his qualifying laps.

1216: Ralf Schumacher moves into second place - over a tenth behind team-mate Montoya.

1215: The fastest man on the track is Williams' Juan Pablo Montoya. He records 1:12.714 at his first attempt.

1213: After completing three laps, Jarno Trulli lies in second. He is just over a tenth of a second behind Barrichello.

1211: Eddie Irvine opens up with a first lap of 1:13.849 as his Jaguar looks to be faring better than it did at Silverstone.

1210: The first Ferraris is out on track. Rubens Barrichello manages a time of 1:13.058 - half a second quicker than his best of the final practice earlier this morning.

1207: Minardi's Alex Yoong opens up with 1:17.366. His time is around five seconds slower than the lap which will claim pole.

1204: Heinz-Harald Frentzen records a lap of 1:18.497 as he coasts around the track. Both Frentzen and Arrows team-mate Bernoldi are going through the motions in order to keep their financially troubled team involved in Formula One.

1200: The qualifying session gets underway with Enrique Bernoldi the first man on the track.
