Lapwatch: Spanish GP qualifying
Michael Schumacher pips Ferrari team-mate Rubens Barrichello for pole position for the second race running at the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona. All times BST.
Leading grid positions for the Spanish Grand Prix:
1. Michael Schumacher 1304: As qualifying comes to an end, Montoya finally puts in a quick lap, popping up in fourth and pushing Coulthard back to seventh. 1303: Another brilliant lap by Jenson Button puts him fifth ahead of Coulthard. 1301: Heartbreak for Barrichello once again as Schumacher grabs pole position at the last possible moment, as he did in San Marino, with an astounding time of 1:16:364. 1300: Barrichello sets a blistering 1:16:690 to beat his own time but Schumacher is two tenths under on his flying lap. 1258: Rubens Barrichello begins another flying lap as he bids to consolidate pole. 1256: Juan Pablo Montoya is still only eighth, while his Williams team-mate Ralf Schumacher is third. 1253: Qualifying restarts, with Jarno Trulli back in 20th place, 14 places behind Renault team-mate Jenson Button. 1247: The session is stopped as Alex Yoong's Minardi loses its front wing and lands in the middle of the track. The Minardi garage close the doors on Yoong's car, ending his chances of improving on last place. The incident follows a similar one in practice when Mark Webber's Minardi suffered the same problem. 1245: Raikkonen overtakes Coulthard for fourth in the battle of the McLaren team-mates. 1244: Michael Schumacher still cannot impact on Barrichello's time, but the track appears to be getting faster with drivers regularly beating their own fastest times. 1243: Montoya exits the pits in the spare car for Williams but has only 15 minutes to improve on 10th position. 1241: Eddie Irvine is lying in 15th, two places below Jaguar team-mate De la Rosa. 1236: Coulthard moves up to fourth, ahead of team-mate Raikkonen, but the McLarens are well off the Ferrari pace. Button's first flying lap sees him goes sixth. 1233: Toyota's Allan McNish spins off into the gravel trap but the Scot does well to avoid a wall. Jenson Button's Renault is yet to emerge with only 26 minutes remaining. Juan Pablo Montoya is only eighth. 1232: Surprise in Barcelona as Michael Schumacher can only manage second on his first flying lap. 1230: At the halfway stage, Barrichello is on provisional pole followed by Ralf Schumacher and Coulthard. 1228: Rubens Barrichello, fastest in practice this morning, immediately overtakes the younger Schumacher with a lap-time of 1:16:933, as world champion Michael Schumacher exits the pits for the first time. 1227: Ralf Schumacher, in his Williams, ensures Coulthard's stay on provisional pole is brief with a stunning lap of 1:17:355. 1225: David Coulthard, with an attacking lap, goes fastest in his McLaren at 1:18:006. The cars have already surpassed last year's pole position time. 1223: Sauber's Felipe Massa makes a brief trip to the top of the time-sheet but seconds later is overtaken by his team-mate Nick Heidfeld. 1222: Barcelona-born Pedro de la Rosa, in his Jaguar, completes his first flying lap and goes third. 1218: Enrique Bernoldi's Arrows clocks the fastest time so far, a quarter of a second faster than he went in practice this morning. 1215: Alex Yoong, who did not qualify in San Marino last time out, takes to the track in his Minardi but is forced to pit after a lap. 1214: Trulli clocks a satisfactory time of 1:19:168. 1212: Jarno Trulli's Renault is the first car on the track as he bids to out-qualify on-form team-mate Jenson Button. 1210: All quiet at the Circuit de Catalunya as the teams bide their time in the pits. 1200: Qualifying begins with the weather cloudy but dry. |
