Latest news first

Top three positions at the San Marino Grand Prix:

1. Michael Schumacher Ferrari
2. Rubens Barrichello Ferrari
3. Ralf Schumacher Williams

1431: Michael Schumacher wins his third race of the season, ahead of team-mate Rubens Barrichello and Ralf Schumacher in the Williams. Montoya's Williams is fourth, Button fifth in the Renault and Coulthard sixth in his McLaren.

1429: Michael Schumacher begins his final lap with a comfortable 15 second lead over team-mate Barrichello.

1428: Sauber's promising Brazilian Massa makes one of the few overtaking manoevres of the race as he goes past Trulli's Renault to move up to eighth place on lap 59.

1425: The Ferraris continue to dominate with 4 laps remaining.

1418: Arrows' Enrique Bernoldi retires on lap 52.

1414: Coulthard's McLaren pits for a second time but the crew do not change the tyres, a desperate bid to stave off the challenge for his points position. It does not stop Button retaking fifth.

1410: As expected, Barrichello pits on lap 47. Disaster strikes for the Ferrari pit crew as they struggle with a problem on the left rear, but he stays ahead of Ralf Schumacher.

Eddie Irvine retires from 14th position with a driveshaft failure.

1409: Race leader Michael Schumacher pits for the second time on lap 46, handing Barrichello the lead.

1407: Raikonnen drives into the pits and straight into the garage, ending his race on lap 44. Coulthard moves into fifth and a possible points finish.

1404: On lap 43, with the threat of rain receding, the two Ferraris lead the way followed by the two Williams of Ralf Schumacher and Montoya and the McLaren of Raikkonen. Coulthard's McLaren is sixth, but seventh-placed Button has already made his second stop.

1402: Sixth-placed Button pits for a second time in a reasonable time which should keep him ahead of Coulthard, who appears to be struggling in his McLaren.

1358: On lap 37, Barrichello sets a fastest lap as he chases his Ferrari team-mate.

1355: Barrichello is over four seconds ahead of third-placed Ralf Schumacher as the Ferraris dominate.

1352: Coulthard pits in his McLaren but fails to get out ahead of compatriot Button in the Renault who moves up to sixth.

1348: A brilliant pitstop by the Ferrari team on lap 32 ensures Barrichello exits the pit ahead of Ralf Schumacher, sending the Tifosi into raptures.

1346: On lap 31, race leader Michael Schumacher makes his first stop swiftly followed by second-placed man Ralf Schumacher.

McLaren's Kimi Raikkonen also stops from fifth place. Jaguar's Pedro de la Rosa retires.

1343: Frentzen's Arrows (lap 26) and Salo's Toyota (lap 27) are forced to retire.

1342: As Barrichello goes to lap Irvine's Jaguar, the Northern Irish driver closes the door much to the annoyance of the Ferrari driver up as he chases second place.

1336: Trulli's team-mate Button makes his first stop and rejoins ahead of the second Renault in 10th. Mika Salo, in the only remaining Toyota, also stop and rejoins in last place. Schumacher's lead is now 15 seconds over brother Ralf.

1335: Renault's Jarno Trulli makes his first stop, rejoining in 11th. Heidfeld is given a drive-through penalty for speeding in the pit lane.

1331: Fisichella is forced to pull off onto the grass on lap 20 as his Jordan suffers a hydraulics problem. Heidfeld's Sauber is in the pits for a second time.

1330: The Jaguars of Eddie Irvine and Pedro de la Rosa are lying 17th and 19th as the team's nightmare weekend continues.

1328: Felipe Massa, in the other Sauber, makes a pitstop on lap 17 as it emerges that the Swiss team have decided on a three-stop strategy.

1325: Michael Schumacher sets a lap record on lap 16, but Ralf also sets his fastest time of the race. Heidfeld makes an unexpected pitstop in his Sauber, dropping him from ninth to 16th.

1323: Into lap 15, Michael Schumacher's lead over his brother stretches to over 10 seconds. The world champion is now 31 seconds ahead of sixth-placed David Coulthard in his McLaren and 20 seconds away from lapping the backmarkers.

1317: Montoya is making little impression on Barrichello, running seven seconds behind back in fourth place. Michael Schumacher continues to set the pace as he sets another fastest lap on lap 12.

1314: Barrichello is closing on Ralf Schumacher, the gap now 1.7 seconds between second and third place.

1313: Takuma Sato becomes the second retirement of the race on lap eight, his Jordan suffering from gearbox failure.

1310: Jenson Button is coming under pressure from the Sauber of Nick Heidfeld. At the front, Michael Schumacher is running about three-quarters of a second per lap faster than Ralf Schumacher.

1307: Into lap three, Michael Schumacher is beginning to pull away from brother Ralf, opening up a gap of over three seconds at the front as the black clouds continue to gather.

1300:Pole position man Michael Schumacher gets away well but team-mate Rubens Barrichello is passed by Williams' Ralf Schumacher who moves up to second. Juan Pablo Montoya attempts a similar move past Barichello but holds back as the Brazilian closes the door. Allan McNish's race lasts only a few metres as his Toyota loses drive almost as soon as the race begins.

1255: The cars prepare for the parade lap with the threat of rain in the air. A wet race would play into the hands of world champion Michael Schumacher, who is a brilliant wet-weather driver and has the advantage of Bridgestone tyres.

The Williams' of Ralf Schumacher and Juan Pablo Montoya are on Michelin tyres.
