Lapwatch: US Grand Prix
Lap-by-lap action from the US Grand Prix
All the action, lap by lap, from the United States Grand Prix in Indianapolis.

Leading positions:
1. Mika Hakkinen - McLaren
2. Michael Schumacher - Ferrari
3. David Coulthard - McLaren
4. Jarno Trulli - Jordan
5. Eddie Irvine - Jaguar
6. Nick Heidfeld - Sauber

19:00 BST After prayers for the victims of terrorism and an emotional rendition of the American national athem by a local children's choir, the drivers embark on the parade lap.

An enormous crowd of 200,000 are packed into the Indianapolis Motor Speedway to see the penultimate Grand Prix of the season.

Mika Hakkinen starts in fourth place after being relegated from second spot by race stewards for passing a red light in the pit lane during qualifying.

Start: World champion Michael Schumacher begins on pole - and he holds onto his lead off the grid.

But his Ferrari team-mate Rubens Barrichello makes the most impressive start and moves up from fifth to third spot, while Juan Pablo Montoya overtakes his Williams colleague Ralf Schumacher to claim second.

Lap 3: With Montoya suddenly struggling, Barrichello takes advantage and moves into second place behind team-mate Schumacher.

Kimi Raikkonen is forced into the pits after suffering a knock against Jarno Trulli. After running repairs the Sauber driver rejoins the race at the back.

Lap 5: Schumacher moves aside to allow his Ferrari colleague Barrichello to take the lead. The Brazilian is within touching distance of second-placed David Coulthard in the drivers' championship standings.

Lap 6: Raikkonen is forced out of the race after damaging the wing of his Sauber.

Lap 11: Race leader Barrichello sets the fastest lap time so far - 1min 15.3secs.

Lap 12: Another fastest time for Barrichello - 1min 15.18secs - as he stretches his lead.

Jean Alesi, in his 200th Grand Prix, produces a neat under-taking manoeuvre to pass Jenson Button in ninth place.

Lap 15: At the end of lap Barrichello is out on his own, more than eight seconds ahead of Schumacher and with a 12-second advantage over Montoya.

Lap 16: With the leading positions unchanged since the opening laps, the real battle is for sixth place, where David Coulthard is being put under intense pressure by Nick Heidfeld.

Lap 19: Montoya is fighting back in third place and has reduced the gap behind Schumacher to 2.2secs.

Lap 20: Barrichello is clearly on a two-stop strategy and he now has an 11-second lead. But he needs more of a cushion if he is to stay in front after re-fuelling.

Lap 22: The Williams pair are starting to fight back against the Ferrari leaders and Ralf Schumacher in fourth place sets the fastest time - 1min 14.7secs.

Lap 24: Ralf Schumacher is the first of the top drivers to enter the pit lane. But his support team struggle to replace the left rear wheel and the pit stop takes 12.5secs, which means he rejoins in ninth place.

Lap 27: Race leader Barrichello goes in for his first stop. He re-enters the fray after 8.6sec, so he is now in fifth place with Ferrari team-mate Schumacher back in front.

Lap 29: Second-placed Montoya increases the pressure on Schumacher and the lead is now just 0.7secs.

Lap 33: In a repeat of his sensational effort in Brazil, Montoya produces another impudent assault on Schumacher. He moves behind the great German driver on the home straight and then slips past him on the inside just before the next bend.

Lap 34: Montoya stretches his lead with the fastest lap so far - 1min 14.4secs.

Lap 35: Leader Montoya enters the pits - and rejoins the race in sixth place after 13.2secs, which is standard for a one-stop strategy.

Lap 36: Ralf Schumacher's race is over. His back end spins round after he locks up on turn six and he is left stranded in the gravel.

Lap 37: There is agony for Montoya as his Williams draws to a halt with mechanical failure just before the pit lane. So within the space of a lap both Williams are out, ending their promising efforts in the race.

Schumacher stops for the first time and drops back to fourth place after 11 seconds.

Lap 45: David Coulthard's pit-stop takes 10 seconds and he resumes the contest in fourth place.

Lap 46: Back in the pack Jacques Villeneuve and Pedro de la Rosa collide, but both are able to carry on after the spin.

Lap 47: Race leader Mika Hakkinen has a 9.6 second pit-stop and comes out in second place behind Barrichello. But the Brazilian faces another stop - and crucially for Hakkinen he is still ahead of Schumacher.

Lap 49: Villeneuve's race ends as his BAR fails again.

Lap 50: Race leader Barrichello comes in for his final stop, which takes 8.2 seconds. But it is not fast enough and Hakkinen is able to move in front. By the end of the lap the McLaren is six seconds ahead of Barrichello's Ferrari.

Lap 52: Eddie Irvine's Jaguar has an eight-second stop and rejoins in seventh place.

Lap 54: Irvine produces a superb move to get past Nick Heidfeld's Sauber. He is now in with a chance of a point in sixth place.

Lap 58: Barrichello, on his two-stop strategy, has now reduced Hakkinen's lead to less than three seconds.

Lap 63: Barrichello continues to push Hakkinen all the way - but the Finn is in impressive form and he is able to increase his lead to 3.1secs.

Lap 66: Schumacher is well off the pace, more than 10 seconds behind Hakkinen and in no position to set a personal best of nine wins in a season.

Lap 68:Barrichello is suddenly in big trouble going into the closing stages. Plumes of smoke are pouring out of the back of his Ferrari and he has slowed alarmingly. He is now nine seconds behind Hakkinen.

Lap 70: Barrichello allows team-mate Schumacher through into second place, but he appears to block Coulthard as the McLaren man closes up.

Lap 71: Coulthard slips past Barrichello into third place, taking a vital advantage over the Ferrari driver in their contest for second place in the championship.

But just when it looks like he might be about to limp home in fourth place, Barrichello's car then stops altogether on the pit straight.

Lap 73: A clearly emotional Hakkinen takes the chequered flag for only his second win of the season - and in his penultimate race before taking a year's sabbatical.

Schumacher is second and Coulthard claims third to consolidate his runners-up position in the title race.
