Lapwatch: Italian GP qualifying
Lap-by-lap action from qualifying at the Italian Grand Prix
All the action from qualifying at the Italian Grand Prix in Monza where Juan Pablo Montoya takes pole position.

Leading six grid positions for Sunday's Formula One Italian Grand Prix:

1. Juan Pablo Montoya (Colombia) Williams one minute 22.216 seconds
2. Rubens Barrichello (Brazil) Ferrari 1:22.528
3. Michael Schumacher (Germany) Ferrari 1:22.624
4. Ralf Schumacher (Germany) Williams 1:22:841
5. Jarno Trulli (Italy) Jordan 1:23.126
6. David Coulthard (Great Britain) McLaren 1:23.148

1201BST: New Minardi driver Alex Yoong suffers the worst possible start to his Formula One career when his car stalls just yards out of the pits.

1202: Troubled Minardi's problems worsen when Fernando Alonso overruns the chicane and stalls almost exactly at the same place where team-mate Yoong stopped.

Both he and Yoong only completed two laps in the morning's 90 minutes session because of problems with the gearbox transmission.

1211: Tomas Enge makes his first appearance in the Prost in near perfect weather conditions at Monza.

1213: Fernando Alonso, who quickly jumps into the spare Minardi, is the second driver on the track.

1216: Arrows driver Enrico Bernoldi starts his flying lap and sets the fastest lap time with one minute 26:519 seconds.

1219: Olivier Panis, who finished 14th in Saturday's free practice session, sets the fastest lap time with one minute 25:257.

1221: Ralf Schumacher immediately makes his impression when he starts his flying lap and sets the fastest time with one minute 23:216.

1223: A flurry of activity sees McLaren pair David Coulthard and Mika Hakkinen drive onto the track, along with Kimi Raikkonen in the Sauber.

1224: Juan Pablo Montoya enters the reckoning and takes the fastest time off team-mate Ralf Schumacher.

1226: Michael Schumacher, driving a plain red Ferrari in respect to the victims of the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington, snatches the lead from Montoya with a time of one minute 22:685.

1228: Italian Jarno Trulli produces a fine lap and moves into the top four.

1230: Prost new boy Tomas Enge's first qualifying session is not one he will want to remember as he is forced to pull off with engine problems.

1233: David Coulthard is not enjoying the best of qualifying sessions, but manages to clock a time 0.787 secs behind Michael Schumacher to move into fifth.

1235: Juan Pablo Montoya suddenly produces a superb lap and clocks a time of one minute 22:431, taking the lead off Michael Schumacher.

1239: Rubens Barrichello moves into third position with a consistent lap, finishing 0.280 secs behind Montoya in the Williams.

1241: The McLarens are both off the pace set by Ferrari and Williams. Mika Hakkinen sets his best lap time, but the Finn is 1.503 secs behind Montoya's lead.

1244: Juan Pablo Montoya extends his lead thanks to a lap time of one minute 22:216. Sauber's Nick Heidfeld takes sixth spot, pushing David Coulthard into seventh place.

1248: Rubens Barrichello takes second spot from Ferrari team-mate Michael Schumacher. Monza could be the first Grand Prix of the season without a Schumacher on the front of the grid.

1252: Coulthard moves into sixth place, moving Heidfeld done to seventh.

1254: With only one run left, Michael Schumacher tries desperately to steal pole from Juan Pablo Montoya, but he cannot dislodge either Montoya or Barrichello on the front of the grid.

1255: Session stopped. Mika Hakkinen spins out of control, crashing into the side barriers after running wide on a bend onto the gravel. Debris is spread across the track, forcing race officials to wave the red flag.

The Finn emerges unhurt from the crash and heads straight back to the McLaren garage. Hakkinen has been in the news this weekend following his decision to take a sabbatical from Formula One next season.

1308: Qualifying is restarted when the debris is cleared off the track. But with only four minutes to go, 10 cars have only 90 seconds to clock a fast time.

1311: Despite all his efforts, Michael Schumacher cannot improve on third position. As the chequered flag is waved, Juan Pablo Montoya starts in pole position for the third time in four Grand Prixs.
