Ralf Schumacher took top spot from his brother Michael in the second practice session for Sunday's Italian Grand Prix.

The German led the way as his Williams team put in a strong performance, with team-mate Juan Pablo Montoya finishing 0.4 seconds behind in second.

Michael Schumacher, who topped the standings after the opening session, slipped to third place, with Jaguar's Pedro de la Rosa an unexpected fourth.

World champion Schumacher was in sombre mood following the terrorist attacks in the United States.

Both he and Ferrari team-mate Rubens Barrichello ran their cars without any sponsors logos and with a black nose on the famous red chassis.

All the drivers stood for a minute's silence at the end of the opening session.

Kimi Raikkonen had a day of mixed fortunes as it was announced that he will take over from Finnish compatriot Mika Hakkinen at McLaren next season.

The 21-year-old Sauber driver finished an impressive seventh in the first session before crashing into the perimeter fencing.

Raikkonen's car spun several times and was sufficiently damaged for the Finn to sit out the second practice session.

Hakkinen finished in sixth place behind Barrichello with fellow McLaren team-mate David Coulthard down in seventh.
